Meanwhile, keep watching for shortage reports, because we should start seeing some sneak in this week, if our doom-o-meter is calibrated correctly.

Very nice, Heineken. I have always thought that approach would make for a great shelter.

It sort of has a Unabomber feel to it. Very austere.

Every time I walk out of a big box store with storage sheds outside I explain to my wife what a great little shelter they would make. I always deliver it like it's the first time I've ever thought of it, and she dutifully looks at me like I am insane every time.

joeltrout, I checked out those small cabins you linked to and I have decided upon "The Ridgedale."

All I need now is $32,500 and a wife mind control device and I should be good to go. Very Happy

Well, it is austere, Tex, but I don't plan to live in it unless the local nuclear power plant suddenly sprouts the tail of a jetliner.

Compared with a tent it's the Taj Mahal!

I like "The Ridgedale." That's all you need. These giant houses we've marooned ourselves in are INSANE.

A lot of land. A little house. That's the thing to aim for. As I've said before, our society has it exactly wrong, as usual.

Some of you may recall seeing a book called "Travel Trailer Homesteading for Under $5,000." I have read it and it's true that if you follow his plan you can have an entire homestead with solar power system, wood stove, a few acres and all fully paid for for $5,000.

There are many nice older travel trailers that people will almost give away.

Similarly, there is a lot of land in rural areas that for one reason or another is cheap and easy to buy. There is a lot of such land in Colorado. There is also a lot of such land in west Texas.

For the creative mind, a very nice homestead could be set up without too much trouble.

You could set up one of these to park your budget travel trailer under to keep it out of the elements:

Drop one of these guys next door to keep all your stuff in:

Pick up one of these from the 1980s:

Locate a person like this in the neighborhood and make friends with him:

If it works out well, you might even think about adding a houseboat to your gear:

Thanks for the belly laugh, Tex. I had a nice long rolling one. Really feels good!

Tex, I am laughing my ass off because what you described is exactly what I did to the T.

About 5 years ago I paid less than $3000 for 15 acres. I put a shipping container on the property, moved a trailer on site, setup a canopy, and installed solar power and water.

Although I paid more than $5K for everything, I have a nice little retreat fully paid for in cash. I have no problems living there full time for next to nothing, but some cash is necessary to pay property tax and communication expenses.

It is still possible to do this if you can find cheap land somewhere. The trick is to find a subdivision within 20 miles of a small town that has good road access, water and level terrain. You can find these properties on ebay, county tax sales or by asking around in specific areas of interest.

If you can get some property that backs up to National Forest, Corps of Engineers or other federal land, that's even better.

BigTex-

Great to hear about that cheap Texas land, but i've watched "No Country for Old Men" a few too many times.

You know, I grew up out there, and we all wished something that interesting would happen, but it never did.

West Texas is a vast place. There is still a lot of room out there for people who like roomy places. Take a look at a map some time. It's a big and sparsely populated place.

Check out the population density map of the whole United States here. It looks like west Texas has some of the lowest population densities anywhere in the western United States.

BigTex-

Your avatar makes me think of "Bubba Hotep"

West TX would be nice, I bet the lightning down there is just awesome. Plus those storms blow up along the dryline down there. Pretty mild climate too...and being west, the humidity would be really low.

That camper on floats with a motor is awesome. I have yet to see
that around here.

Yes, that is the mighty Bruce Campbell as Elvis in Bubba Hotep.

It gets plenty hot, but you can run a swamp cooler because of the low humidity.

Being able to see the stars is awesome. It's not for everyone, but it's a neat place if you're into that sort of thing.

Oh yeah, everyone down here has one. I'm actually thinking about upgrading mine right now to something like this:

This approach is also popular:

Um, there's a reason for that. I've been to western Oklahoma and I bet west Texas is even more barren. Nothing could induce me to live there. I know some people with a cattle ranch down there, and they need a huge spread to maintain the cattle. Nobody but the toughest will do that soon, as in the past.

Here are a few shots of west Texas that are fairly typical:

lol @ BigTex!

I miss visiting Big Bend National Park. It's like going back in time when one goes out there to that part of Texas and Mexico. Those are the Bad Lands!

You can get some good deals in SE Oklahoma. Weyerhauser and Georgia Pacific are selling off a lot of timber for $1.5-$2K an acre. Lots of hard timber, good water, deer, and very isolated.
