joeltrout, I checked out those small cabins you linked to and I have decided upon "The Ridgedale."
All I need now is $32,500 and a wife mind control device and I should be good to go.

Some of you may recall seeing a book called "Travel Trailer Homesteading for Under $5,000." I have read it and it's true that if you follow his plan you can have an entire homestead with solar power system, wood stove, a few acres and all fully paid for for $5,000.
There are many nice older travel trailers that people will almost give away.
Similarly, there is a lot of land in rural areas that for one reason or another is cheap and easy to buy. There is a lot of such land in Colorado. There is also a lot of such land in west Texas.
For the creative mind, a very nice homestead could be set up without too much trouble.
You could set up one of these to park your budget travel trailer under to keep it out of the elements:
Drop one of these guys next door to keep all your stuff in:
Pick up one of these from the 1980s:
Locate a person like this in the neighborhood and make friends with him:
If it works out well, you might even think about adding a houseboat to your gear:

I have 20 acres in central Kansas for sale for 60k. It has good water, creek, trees, grass and one mile from town of 12,000. Community college, hospital, walmart, and all amenities.

Tex, I am laughing my ass off because what you described is exactly what I did to the T.
About 5 years ago I paid less than $3000 for 15 acres. I put a shipping container on the property, moved a trailer on site, setup a canopy, and installed solar power and water.
Although I paid more than $5K for everything, I have a nice little retreat fully paid for in cash. I have no problems living there full time for next to nothing, but some cash is necessary to pay property tax and communication expenses.
It is still possible to do this if you can find cheap land somewhere. The trick is to find a subdivision within 20 miles of a small town that has good road access, water and level terrain. You know, I grew up out there, and we all wished something that interesting would happen, but it never did.
West Texas is a vast place. There is still a lot of room out there for people who like roomy places. Take a look at a map some time. It's a big and sparsely populated place.
Check out the population density map of the whole United States here. It looks like west Texas has some of the lowest population densities anywhere in the western United States. _________________

West TX would be nice, I bet the lightning down there is just awesome. Plus those storms blow up along the dryline down there. Pretty mild climate too...and being west, the humidity would be really low.

It gets plenty hot, but you can run a swamp cooler because of the low humidity.
Being able to see the stars is awesome. It's not for everyone, but it's a neat place if you're into that sort of thing.

You can get some good deals in SE Oklahoma. Weyerhauser and Georgia Pacific are selling off a lot of timber for $1.5-$2K an acre.
