Well, well, well -- a nice little fascist circle jerk going on in this thread.

The roots of liberalism were planted long, long before the age of oil.

Liberalism is based on 2 planks:

1. The right to own private property, and,
2. That there exists certain inalienable rights to which the majority should not be able to infringe.

As in, for example, a vote is taken and the majority votes to take away your guns. Well, majority rule, right? Wrong. Not in the philosophy of liberalism.

You're referring to an older usage of the term "Liberalism," that was in vogue in the 18th and 19th centuries. This type of liberalsim, sometimes called "classic liberalism," had little to do with social safety nets or gun control and was largely against government interference in most areas of life.

The liberalism referred to by the opening post is modern liberalsim or "social liberalsim," a 20th century political philosophy, which is at odds with much of classical liberalsim.

The "liberals" of the 18th and 19th centuries would find much more in common with today's traditional conservatives than today's "liberals."

With regards to all the negativity expressed towards modern liberals in this thread, I find it sadly ironic that the "welfare" so hated by modern conservaties pales in comparison to the amount of corporate and military welfare so generously handed out by the chosen representatives of America's majority right-wing. Working class hatred of the poor has been masterfully utilized by America's corporate class to support a massive corporate welfare state.

There must be a chart somewhere that compares corporate welfare to social welfare for the Clinton years vs. the Bush years.

Has anyone here read about the privatization of the prison system during the clinton/gore years?

Hey Socrates and Buggy et al,

For the love of god learn how to edit the length of the quote to the specific sentence or paragraph you are citing.

Sincerely,
Your fellow PO posters.

Thats a liberal fantasy from the same mindset as Sen. Obama's rant against working people for clinging to their religion and such.

There is no working class hatred of the poor.

Working people typically don't have much use for muggers and thieves and welfare cheats, but working class folks often have a great deal of sympathy for the poor, because they are darned close to being poor themselves. Smile

Being in a working-class family I can say that it depends.
I feel most working-class people feel sympathetic towards people who are poor but are trying very hard to make ends meet.
We don't like hobos though or druggies.

Its the damn Conservatives who got us into this mess. Peak Oil represents the end of the mental illness called Conservativism. Conservatives believe in completely using and abusing and destroying the environment. Overfish the oceans, keep drilling and using as much oil as possible, have as many children as possible. Hunt all animals into extinction. Conservatives have never believed in conservation or caring for the environment.

Modern definition of liberalism, which, in my book, equates to Socialism:

The belief that, if you pay people to do nothing, they will work harder.

That's mine. It's beautiful. And although I almost never care about getting proper credit, you make sure you cite my ass when you use it - and, unless you're a saving-the-world-liberal, you will use it.

It's just that good.

and by the way Soc - if you are, in fact, a homeschooled middle schooler - then well done. You write and think better than 99% of adults who I have met.

Back in the prehistoric days when I could vote the true colours were:
Conservative - blue
Labour - red
Liberals - ORANGE

So the answer to the implied question is:
"The true colour of Liberal is orange".

Wow, I totally missed that...when did he rant against working people clinging to their religion? I thought he likes religion.

Ludi,

I recall the senator's words. It wasn't so much a rant as just trying to straddle that fence like most politicians do when coping with the extremes in the secular and religeous worlds.

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. —Ronald Reagan, 1981
