How then, do we move backwards? How does a society, with most of the people having no clue of future events, move from being dependent on a vast and intertwined network of goods and services produced by the indigenous people of whereever, to a local resource and renewable energy based society, and do so in the timeframe available (20-30 years using the most liberal extimates, 10-20 with resonable estimates, 5-10 with worst case scenarios), all the while prices on everything increasing, world politics getting more militaristic, governments continuously reducing civil liberties, shortages of goods on the market and weather patterns resembling bad Hollywood movies?

I live near a city which embraces its multiculturalism. I don't see gang warfare being likely (except between gangs, who tend to be of the same subculture). _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow..." - jboogy

For the last few weeks I've been working nex to a cute suburban mall. You know, the standard AMC theaters, marry-go-around, food court, JC Penny's, etc, type of mall.
I go there for lunch. I had a smoothie today.
I see dead people. 20-something year old couples, with 1-2 small children, 1-2 toddlers, driving SUVs or Mini Vans, buying toys, eating pizza at Sbarro's, all while crude oil and gasoline just hit another record high, mortgage crisis, credit card crisis, inflation, unemployment, war, food shortage, the works. There is no way these folks will live or survive long.
I see dead people. Do you?
What you see are called lemmings. They are just running along with the herd, keeping their heads down. They really don't want to see what's happening. When they go flying off the cliff it will be such a shock, many will flip mentally. Hence you will have a sort of walking dead, zombie. The blind are leading the blind, only those who have the courage to look around and take a stand have a chance to survive. Collective karma will be reaped shortly. It will be a cleansing of the earth and a lesson for those who survive. It is what happens when intelligence is misplaced.
As far as the military pictures above, lets see them operate without oil. Do they have a calvery with horses as backup?

Rest assured that the military will always get its oil, electricity etc FIRST IN LINE.
How clueless can one be ?
You guys are really spoiled brats, aren't you ? No clue about reality and how the world works.
Power grows from the barrel of a gun.
Geez, the current generation of feminised schoolboys.
All of them imagining themselves so special and insightful. Many of those dead people you see might do much better than you in the future. You never know what they know and what plans they have. _________________ only the paranoid survive

Sorry guys,
I subcribe with the notion that people are complete lemmings. Hurricane Katrina is a perfect example of how a majority people will handle extreme circumstances. If the government didn't intervene the death would have been way higher. So yes your superficial yuppie couple we most likely break down mental and die.

Something like that. A lot of people, and to an extend myself, are waiting or expecting somebody will bail us out.

In a war, one of the first targets will be the enemies oil. So after the nuclear dust settles there won't be alot left to support large armies. As far as the rest of what you wrote, speak for yourself.

I think Ludi made a good point about the type of reactions people, some people will embrace their differences and use that in a way to work as a community to adapt, others will be like the Katrina mess where people were screaming "where's FEMA, the government, etc". It was interesting to see the midwestern community on the news that included prisoners, local folks and the amish all working together on sandbags. None of the people filling the sandbags stopped and asked why FEMA wasn't there filling the bags. Communities with the mentality that they have to take care of themselves will adapt.

Yes, I see dead people. Dead man walking.
I watch people at the park, at work, at church and wonder who will be alive in 20 years. I see children and I wonder if they'll be alive in 20, or what kind of people they will grow up to be. I watch my son play and wonder what he'll live through in his lifetime. I wonder how we will die.
Yes, I see dead people. But we all die regardless of when we live or for how long. We all die (and return, imho).

Perhaps. Maybe someone who knows about demographics can confirm this, but I suspect that the total of all people alive today exceeds the sum of all previous generations. If not, it’s awful close. That means that if you believe in recycling, there is a soul deficit, ie there are people alive today who are soulless. Peleg could have good time with that. Perhaps souls can divide like amoeba and provide an endless source. A sort of celestial cloning. Maybe we are into borrowing souls from other species – chimpanzees for instance? They’re in decline now. Or, when we reach the point of equilibrium, (current population is equaled by the sum of all previous generations), if we are not there already, is there suddenly a zero birth rate?
What happens to other sentient, but non human species? Are their souls or spirit or life or whatever also recycled? Why not? Can we be so arrogant as to think that humans are the only worthy life form, whatever that means?
When you’re dead, you’re dead imho. Why make everything more complicated than it need be? The simple answers are usually correct.
