Note that they've only identified 250 in the US to apply this technique to. If I read this right that's 323 mb divided amongst the 5 fields in their acreage, too. Why they don't just drill horizontal wells and hydrofrac is another question - probably they're coming from the conventional mining industry and this is what they're good at. Roc or ROCK perhaps know more about this outfit.

You don't get to just drill a well, hook that up to a pipeline and stick the other end in your SUV. No. You got to drag a steam machine out to every single well and light up the fire, burn some wood or charcoal or whatever, get that steam down there etc. wait for the goo to melt, send it up etc.
This is called the bottom of the barrel or The Dregs. You don't run America on Dregs. God Dammit. _________________

Except, the bottom of this particular barrel just happens to be 161.5 times the size of the top of the barrel. _________________ Abundance - what a concept! |

Boy is MonsieurX ever wrong . . . and persistent. This is what Exxon chief executive Rex Tillerson has to say about the same field: "This new resource will be one of the most technically difficult and expensive in the world.” _________________

I have a sneaking suspicion they'll eventually be able to produce at a greater rate from the 323 million barrel reserves than they currently do from their 2 million barrel reserves. _________________ Abundance - what a concept! |

How can you be confident those 323 million barrels, the last in the field and produced by a technology designed to extract bitumen, will move as quickly as the free-flowing 2 million? _________________

1. How do we know that their first 2 million in reserves were all that "free-flowing," and,
2. Even if they were free-flowing, 2 million in reserves is diddly-squat. Even if that first 2 million in reserves were all 40 degree oil buried only 5,000 feet beneath the surface in very porous rocks, they're probably only sucking 20K bpd from it, or something like that. I find it quite easy to believe they can eventually suck more than 20K bpd from even the worst heavy gunk or most impervious "ceramic" in the world, if they're saying they've got 323 million barrels of it they're willing to add to their reserves. _________________ Abundance - what a concept! |

One other point of order. Being a new member at peakoil.com does not mean you are ignorant of peak oil and /or its ramifications. Years ago I was a member of the first yahoo user group "running on empty" until it got a little weird! LOL
Next, please keep in mind that being a "doomer" is by no means new to the human condition. Peak Oil, the anticipation of the antichrist, looking for the 12th Imam.... does not mean you have to drink the Koolaid or be on the next away team to the comet Hale-Bop. LOL
So put away your converse sneakers, at least for the short term! _________________ Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well. |

1. How do we know that their first 2 million in reserves were all that "free-flowing," and,
2. Even if they were free-flowing, 2 million in reserves is diddly-squat. | I wouldn't call one third of a billion dollars diddly-squat.

That's great money with little effort.
Good oil spews money, bad bitumen sucks the same.

The technology is used in shallow tar-sand fields. _________________

If you are going to use this as a signature, please give the attribution correctly. It's Spencer with a 'c' not an 's'

In any case, a paraphrase might be more appropriate. ie
"This is not the beginning. It is not even the ending of the beginning. But it is the beginning of the end."
Oh, I forgot. You're the anti doomer. |
