Russian and Mexican production are definitely dropping. Yet there is no demand destruction in India and China.
In the long run, oil will go up. It should go up. |

Six months ago most were amazed that oil reached $100, now the question is whether it will stay less than $150 the remainder of 2008. How far we have come.
My opinion is that the economic weakness will cause world central bankers/governments to increase inflation. Thereby prices will actually rise faster when the economy is weakening faster.
Didn't anyone notice the official CBO projection is for a federal deficit of $400 billion this fiscal year - and the recession has hardly got going? That $400 billion will be financed by inflationary Fed policies, and next year, there will be an even bigger deficit to finance. _________________ It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting. |

I'll say 2010.
Demand destruction is really kicking in now, the US is officially in a recession and in a 'bear' market now.
|
I'm retracting my prediction. All bets are off now due to geo-political concerns namely the heightened threat of an invasion of Iran.
While demand destruction should depress oil prices, this is overshadowed by far more serious supply concerns.
The limb is creaking, I'm backing out |

I'm betting today is the day we hit $150. If not, it will stop just short at 149 something and wait a week or two to break through. _________________ "So while you sit and whistle Dixie with your money and your power.

Yeah, could be 149.95 today, or higher. 147.30 already this AM. Only 1.8% more to go ! |

Agreed. The brief $10 dip was so incredibly short-lived and we're right back at record territory. |

just came across of this youtube clip
added October 02, 2007
oil was at $70 and CIBC World Markets chief economist predicts a price of $100 for 2008
very funny to watch the interviewers faces when he makes that predicting, knowing we're now already at 147

A couple of weeks ago when I saw this thread, I predicted we'd have $150/barrel by next week (week of July 14th). I still stand by that prediction. I think it will be either Tu or Wed. I'm not expecting great numbers from the government on reserves after what we've been hearing about Cantarell and thus Mexican exports. That will cause a great amount of bullishness in the oil sector so that, if we aren't at $150 by Tuesday, then this news will send it over and beyond on Wednesday.

The volitility of the markets has increased substantially over the last year. A $10/day swing is not unheard of. A price rise in the 5% range is $7.50. This puts $200/barrel possible with a week of bad news.
I will miss these days of cheap oil. _________________ If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever."

I think it matters to those of us who buy the stuff. The price of gas and heating oil seem to be on an ever increasing upwards trend.
We live in a state that has long, cold winters and lots of people who have to drive long distances to get to any kind of work.
The price of oil could make the difference between life and death for a lot of elderly people on fixed incomes.
I don't think $150 means that much, but the high cost matters to people here in Maine. _________________ Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings. |

I think it may take two more inventory reports, that is the one on July 23, for most to tealize just how bad the oil inventory/import situation is. Could get to $150 then (even without Iran war talk)
By bad, I mean refineries reducing output due to lack of supplies. _________________ It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting. |
