We are entering the stage where ideology and education about sustainability and living within carrying capacity will be augmented by the reality of identifiable consequences of our overshoot. External consequences like the peaking and decline of below ground energy and commodity resources, above ground environmental degradation of our climate, soils, fisheries and climate will have a profound effect on our culture. 2009 is the year when we start to feel it.

In a recent article, I learned that the state of California will begin requiring 'global warming score' stickers on your car's windshield.

Not simply a measurement of smog emissions or mpg, this is a calculation using those numbers to determine, on a scale of 1-10, the vehicle's impact on global warming.

Is this going to make a difference to consumers and auto owners? Isn't it always the bottom line (the wallet) that hits consumers, ie the price of fuel right now? Are Californians going to be seen as outlandish in adding this sticker? Will mandating it raise awareness of our personal contribution to climate change via our autos?

Why do you gals and guys think?

Consumers care about total operating cost. The other stuff is election material. Can't wait for the road kill sticker. 1-10 based on the number of animals it kills. Obviously peak oilers want the highest kill score for food purposes.

Global warming may be good for us. We wont have much fuel to heat our homes, so at least we wont freeze to death as much in a warmer climate.

Have you ever thought about how much your homes are dependent on natural gas for cooking, heating and hot water? Well, we will run out of natural gas in the next few decades, just after have we depleted our crude supplies.

So does that mean my coal fired pickup idea is out?

+1

If the people gave a damn in the first place they would research before buying anyway.

I suspect its about revenue. First get the stickers on then add a surcharge for parking, toll roads, etc based on your GW number... Evil or Very Mad

If every fanboy bought a Prius right now, the world supply of iron would be exhaused & China would have to be nuked to destroy all the toxic manufacturing waste.

FYI, stickers for low emission vehicles have been around since emissions were the big thing. Now that global warming is big, it's probably a sticker for a low global warming vehicle.

All you have to do is buy a decal saying you've bought carbon offsets, just like Al Gore.

If a rich environmentalists like Al Gore can fly around in a private jet and claim he isn't hurting the environment because he buys carbon offsets, then the "little guy" should be able to drive around in a SUV and not hurt the environment if he buys carbon offsets...... Smile

Ah, but going in which direction? I'm at the business end of a hell of a lot more public resentment since I got my Prius. When I had the pickup truck, no one gave a damn. So who's going to get the vandalism?

Interesting. I had brought up precisely this notion at a local P.O. group meeting last Fall, namely the idea of using public shame, ridicule and scorn as a way to start motivating cultural change (I even used the example of how this type of peer pressure was used to discourage smoking in public places). It was basically blown off because it wasn't a 'positive, uplifting' approach...

One idea I had was an advertising campaign that would feature three hot looking women strolling down the street, some guy cruising by in his big, shiny pickup truck, and having one of the ladies make some comment to the other two along the lines of, "Check him out", to which one of the others would respond, "You know what they say about men with big trucks", with the third one saying "Yea! We know what he's compensating for!", at which point they all bust out in uncontrollable giggling. I suspect numerous variations on the theme could be formulated.

Another similar campaign could focus on kids having friends deriding them for being shuttled everywhere by their parents, how 'uncool' it was and such...

It doesn't matter what direction, just bring on the vandals. As we all know, to many people is the real problem. We can just make it open season on Vandals. That will help solve the problem. Eco stickers won't, but a vandal bounty, of say one gallon of gas for each pair of ears, will thin 'em out quick.
