I agree with the other poster who fears Matt Simmons is sounding too shrill in that item. He has great credentials, but I fear he's losing "street cred" by jumping into the most apocalyptic scenario in that type of 6-minute discussion.

Why? Because he's telling the truth, and not sugar-coating it? I think you are missing the whole point. He's now just coming out and telling it like it is, unlike before. That is why so many here are freaked out. There isn't much time left before things start to get bad. That's why Matt S. is so frustrated. We have run out of time and nobody is listening.

I don't think Matt will be on CNBC again.

He used the words, "food shortages".

I don't think they're going to give him a second chance to say that.

Cash, if there's ever a moment and place for people to "man up" -- it's in these times where assholes in the media and public spotlight are so completely namby-pamby, wishy-washy, indirect and obfuscating. Simmons stepped up and TOLD THE DAMN TRUTH. How rare is that? And the fact that he feels this situation is so dire means it probably really is that bad.

It'd be great if we could actually talk about it, but it'll never happen.

Yeah, Matt will be back...early and often, much like Boone Pickens.
Both very experienced and very successful businessmen, Boone has not gone doomer yet, but when his windfarm, nat gas cars idea fail to gain traction with the PTB, he'll change his tune. I love the grandfatherly look he gets when he explains that 88 mb/day demand cannot be covered by 85 mb/day production. The kind of look that says if you cannot figure out the implications of that simple fact, I'm not gonna waste my time explaining it to you.

I think that when Matt went into the we should have been exploring and mapping all along piece, he was meaning that at least we would know what we had available to us on the continental shelf. Maybe there is oil to be had...maybe not...at this point it seems that no one is sure.

All in all a very nice segment for Matt (complete with young hot shot rolling his eyes). I hate it when he refers to his favorite "price per cup of oil is to cheap" slogan, and I was glad he didn't refer to that again, some things are just not sold by the cup....quart maybe....and thats plenty high...and going higher. My $3.49 quart of 10W-30 the other day comes out to $586.32 a barrel!

I bet Matt has the knowledge and the inside info to see through all those bullshit multi-billion find oil field claims popping up every other day. Knowing that the actual amount taken from those fields will be like less than 1% of what they claim is there and it will be many years before any production is seen if probably rather frustrating.

I bet once gas shortages start to appear he become scarce. Someone in his position should have a good idea when that will happen.

I don't get people like you. Do you have an obsession with attractive well-spoken people? How can you turn a discussion on Simmons television performance into a dig on the left?

We have just endured the worst presidency in American history. Bush and Gang invaded and near ruined a country for the HELL OF IT. You got a reason? The economy has never looked so bad. California is burning because of bad environmental laws that allowed clearcuts without remediation. The planet is quick becoming uninhabitable because environmental protection has been gutted by the Republicans for generations.

Yet the 8 years of Clinton paradise go unrecognized by loony-tunes such as yourself.

Who is the madman?

This is a discussion on Simmons.

I hate to bring it up, but neither Mr. Clinton nor Mr. Bush will go down as the worst presidents in American History. You might want to look at Mr. Grant and Mr. Harding.

As for wars of adventure need we mention Mexico, Cuba, the Philippines and Vietnam?

As for the worst economy, it might be beneficial to look at the panics of 1837, 1857, 1873, 1893, and 1929.

pstarr,

There isnt a politician alive today who is gong to get us out from under the effects of PO. No one is up to the challenge.
Doesn't matter which side they come from, its all the same crap.

I hope Simmons keeps the pressure on telling it like it is. We need action and we need it now.

Amen AP!

No one has the balls to tell the American public to get off their high horse, roll up their sleeves and get to work.

I think about the WW2 generation, and how many ways they were willing to sacrifice their own comfort and even lives to get the job done. Now we're just a nation of sophistry and overindulgence.

Of course. Politicians are, by the most part, steamy piles of shayt who have learned how to wrap their own self-interest in smarmy, sweet-talking jive shayt.

They need to be led around by the short hairs by us their bosses (US) and republicans are a distraction from that goal. They hate democracy and believe the rich bastards are looking out for them.

I wish they'd shut up.

"Bush and Gang invaded and near ruined a country for the HELL OF IT" No.....not for the "Hell of it"......for the oil!!!!

You completely missed the point! You are so wrapped up in your ideology you can't see the truth. I never said I was a fan of Bush.......I said they are nobodys fool. As for the Clintons, I do not consider them part of the "looney left". But you are blind not to see that the radical left has a lot of weight in the current Democratic party.

Wake up!

And I agree, lets get back on topic.

The worst scenario is the default outcome in an unstable system.

This need not be the case if some form of control is applied - a function in a negative feedback loop, for example. But it will be the case if nothing constructive is done. I think it is fair to suggest that the worst case scenario would transpire if the other panel guests' voices were to prevail and the nation was kept sitting on its hands.

PSTarr, you must be past the point where you think this is a Dems, Repubs issue, right?

I mean, if nothing else, 2 years of Dems in control of both houses has made clear that they are no different from Bush, right?

I've said this many times before.

The worst part about Bush is that he's allowed a bunch of otherwise smart people to believe that he is personally responsible for everything that's happened.

Nonsense.

Democrats are as responsible, and perhaps more responsible because we've heard barely a whisper out of them for 2 years.

Figuring out that Dems=Repubs and that any conjured differences between them are just there to lead you to believe there is a substantive difference should be really early in the process of figuring out where we are at and how we got here.

In a short 7 months the Dems will likely take control of both houses and the white house. They will do nothing differently. What will the card carrying democrats say then? That they need a fillibuster proof majority in the Senate and two more liberal Supreme Court judges.

Stop focusing on Bush. He is a distraction. The system is what's screwed up, not the token moron they install in the public's eye.

I can think of an American politician who is doing that, but the American public aren't ready to listen to that yet.
