Shouldn't any of the "melons" work good down there...that is...as long as they are watered well? You could be doing the "watermelon crawl" !
I've tried growing watermelon up here and have never had luck. I've got canteloupe going right now and i think i have some small ones growing.
I ate 2 large watermelons in 4 days last week. I'm addicted. _________________ "Oil is going up because we use too much oil, and the capacity to replace reserves is dwindling"

Yep, melons are doing great, with enough water. They love it hot! _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |

I saw the chickenwire along the bottom of your hogwire. What are you trying to keep out? I'm suffering rabbit raids, but I intend to catch and eat them soon.
Also, how are you pulling out your well water? Pump on grid power? Have you considered windmill with a cistern?
This year I'm getting a laundry basket each of squash and cucumbers every other day. Mellons are ok. Corn is ok. Carrots and lettuce are not doing so good. _________________ Conform . Consume . Obey . |

Trying to keep out rabbits, chickens, armadillos.
Our well is on grid power, but I hope to scrape enough $ together in the next few months to put in a PV well pump. There's neither room nor wind enough for a windmill, unfortunately. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |

The recent rains missed my house again. I was checking the radar and there was this perfect circle of dryness with my house in the center. It rained west, north, east, and south from here. I am so po'd.

Yep, it's miserable. Some of my young trees are having a hard time, I need to keep after watering them.
The older trees mostly seem to be doing ok, though the native elms are starting to drop leaves prematurely.
We're starting to get oak wilt (not close to the house), and I'm sure this dry weather isn't going to help. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |

I'd eat the whole thing.

Drought isn't my favorite weather disaster. Given a choice, I think I prefer flood. It's more dramatic, less depressing.
I like summer just fine. _________________ No original ideas are contained in this post. |

Of all of the disasters I've experienced, I prefered the scourge of butterflies.
Nice garden btw! My cukes and tomatoes are taller than I am now, so I think I'll have to cut them off soon. _________________ When somebody makes a statement you don't understand, don't tell him he's crazy. Ask him what he means. -- Otto Harkaman, Space Viking |

We had grasshoppers one year, back when I lived in CA. That was interesting, the sidewalk was black with them. _________________ Conservation is conservative

I'm glad everyone's gardens are doing well; my soil is so bad that nothing much is growing ... except sunflowers. They love it here. _________________ Conservation is conservative

Beautiful pictures, Ludi.

How about some hugelculture pits to capture water deeply? |
