Everyones got to die sometime. You can't stop death. But I will probably survive the die off. I am a fighter and I will die trying to survive.

cestlavie, have you taken any of Tom's wilderness classes? I very, very highly recommend it if not. Or if so. Smile

I hang out with a few guys that are PO believers ... but surprisingly we haven't made few real preparations for any future disaster.

I have learned how to garden and collected a stockpile of seeds, but that is about it. I am now only really beginning to think about stockpiling other necessities, water purification, etc.

What I wonder is just how quickly will things fall apart and will we get any advanced notice. This is the reason I am not acting that quickly. I am assuming that their will be signs of an imminent collapse well before it happens.

Once it does happen however there will be rationing of just about everything which will make stockpiling much more difficult.

What sorts of signs would you expect?

For my own part, I think we may be getting advance notice of a global depression, which if we are at or have passed peak oil, we will (probably) never pull out of. So, I think these are the signs we need to be looking for, the economic ones.

But I would be curious to know what sorts of signs you yourself would expect to see.

Yes, glad that you ask! I did take the initial Standard class. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I dont have time anymore to take any of the other classes but I still have the inspiration of that first class and the feel that it is possible to live in the woods. However, in a survival situation nature does not accept any mistakes. I learned that you can use your shirt in the early morning to collect dew off the grass and wring it into your mouth. The wilderness is my plan B and farming is currently my plan A. I've been focusing my time and energy on plan A but have been gradually learning about wild foods in-case my gardens all get raided. It could spell disaster if that was all I relied upon for the family. Also I agree the biggest enemy will most likely be disease. They will proliferate in the less than sanitary conditions of the future. I recommend anyone to stock up on coconut oil. If you dont already know about coconut oil there is a book "The coconut oil miracle". My family has had great benefits from using coconut oil, now its the only oil we cook with.

What I've heard is that coconut oil is highly saturated and extremely unhealthy. It's supposed to be one of the worst oils, which explains why it's often an ingredient in cheap junk foods.

But this is only what I've heard, not what I've researched.

Good Question ... the day they bring in fuel rationing I would suggest you get down to Walmart and load up.

The vegetable oil industry has been largely responsible for the misinformation on coconut oil since the 1970's. Actually a diet rich in vegetable oils will make you a prime candidate for a heart attack but a diet rich in coconut oil will only increase your health. You will NOT get fat as the veg oil industry says but actually lose weight as long as you avoid the other oils. Coconut oil has anti-bacterial properties, rejuvenates the skin, and has a number of other health benefits. It does not oxidize as quickly as other oils (as they sit on the shelves) which creates the free radicals in the body. We have been treating our autistic son with capryllic acid which is derived from coconut oil to fix his gut dysbiosis (dysbiosis is simply imbalance between the good and bad bacteria in the stomach). Most of the immune function is located in the stomach and when you have a healthy stomach you can efficiently absorb the nutrition you are eating. Many people have horrible diets and are not aware (doctors included) of the complex environment in the stomach unless you visit a GI doctor of course... :>

cestlavie, nice to meet someone in the "family." I've taken Standard and Advanced Tracking and Awareness, a truly awesome class.

Wilderness is my "if all else fails" option, my plan "D" I suppose. Realistically, it would be very tough to survive a winter out there. Especially if everyone else were duking it out to do the same. Even Tom told us his first winter in the bush was an eye opener. ('Course, he didn't even take a knife...) I intend to apply my skills to situations closer to home if possible. Suburban naturalist? Dunno.

The tracking is a blast in any case, and the awareness. People I know often comment on how I'm always pointing out wildlife to them, and well, just stuff that normally goes unnoticed. It's something that strikes me, how we've all really turned off our faculties living in this personal-bubble society. And I've only scratched the surface.

This week I was very near to wild raptors on five days out of the seven. Within a few yards. That doesn't happen, unless I do a lot of stalking. This time they were just there. Anyone here believe in omens, or know how to interpret them? dontknow

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coconut_oil

According to wiki coconut oil was regarded by the medical establishment as being fatty, and then studies found that unrefined coconut oil caused subjects to lose weight.

Ok, now which is it? Interesting that most Americans are fat and are consuming vegetable oils but not organic unrefined coconut oil. Everyone I know is overweight and uses vegetable oils. People in Russia are thin (relative to Americans that is) however in their culture they typically eat lots of fish (high fatty acids). Polar bears have a diet almost exclusively of fish which is high fat. But when they did studies they found that the fish oil actually normalized their cholesterol levels and they didnt have the problems with high blood pressure and heart attack like we do. So its not just about the fat that you eat but how its processed in the body that determines if its bad for you. If you eat lots of coconut oil you'll be ok but If you eat lots of french fries fried in lard or vegetable oils then probably not long term at least

I'm 26 now and in pretty good health, but I don't expect to hit 30. IMO the die-off will be fairly quick and brutal, starting shortly after the free market system is abolished.

I'd like to be wrong of course! Best of luck to you all.

Well, provided that there's no nuclear or biological warfare in my vicinity--sure I think I'll survive die-off. I certainly plan on surviving at least 5 years unless I die in a car accident.
