Forgive me ye old-timers if this is new. In my studies I came across something new. Well, new to me anyway. I think, aside from the initial wake up call I got to peak oil a few months ago, this would be the second most difficult news to digest.
Oil production per capita peaked in 1979.
Which means that every gallon of gas I use is a gallon somebody somewhere else doesn't get to use. And of course the paradox would be that if I use it and he can't, I inevitabely make his life better and my life worse. Now my head hurts. _________________ We are so screwed. |

Yes, it did.

Not paradoxical, it is the obvious converse. And it makes Jack quiver with pleasure. _________________ Volatility. When life isn't exciting enough. |

It's a good thing we're a lot smarter about how we use oil than we were in 1978 or even 1998.
GDP/barrel of oil has been increasing dramatically over the past 30 years, even after you factor out the manipulations. _________________ "www.peakoil.com is the Myspace of the Apocalypse." |

(Assuming you're talking about US GDP)
Is there really improved efficiency or is it just the result of moving energy intensive industries to Mexico or China where they don't show up in the US consumption figures, but the US is still the ultimate consumer?
I ask this every time I see the claim about "GDP/barrel of oil" but never get a good answer. |

Great question, I'm going to remember that one. _________________ "The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences…"
