Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

Also, the example of the body adapting to higher elevations does not hold water. Higher elevations STRESS the body. Sure, it can tolerate the conditions short term, but studies have shown long term brain degeneration from prolonged and repeated exposure to conditions found at higher elevations.
Make sure you tell that to the Sherpa's, Inca's and other cultures which have survived and prospered at high altitude, I am sure they will give you a very warm welcome. _________________ Always appeal to a man's enlightened self interest, you can trust him to look out for himself honestly, It's when you appeal to his Honor or the Common Good that he stops paying attention.

Makes sense to me. I've suffered a lot from hayfever when I first moved to Australia and heard that restriction in breathing especially during night can damage brain, lower IQ and increase risk of heart attacks. Luckily I had it fixed before I turned into a complete imbecil.
Anyway a quick search came up with amongst other this:

NEW STUDY: ALTITUDE CAUSES PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE
The descent is always the most dangerous part of the climb. Returning unharmed to base camp has stymied some of the most talented mountaineers in history. According to a new study by researchers at Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza, Spain, very few high-altitude climbers actually do return unharmed. The study, by doctors Nicolas Fayed, Pedro J. Modrego and Humberto Morales, scanned thirty-five high-altitude climbers' brains with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines upon their return from their respective expeditions. Only one of the thirty-five climbers returned without measurable brain damage.
High altitude exposure results in decreased oxygen pressure and an increased formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), which is often associated with increases in oxidative damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. Exposure to high altitude appears to decrease the activity and effectiveness of antioxidant enzymes system. Moreover, during high altitude exposure several RONS generating source are activated, including mitochondrial electron transport chain, xanthine oxidase, and nitric oxide synthase (NO). Physical exercise at high altitude can further enhance the oxidative stress. The available information suggests that RONS are involved and are even a causative factor of acute mountain sickness. Supplementation of antioxidant seems to be a necessary step to prevent or decrease to high altitude exposure associated oxidative stress.

Thanks for your points, skeptic, all points I am well aware of.
But do you really think Nepalese are no better adapted to their enviroment than anyone else would be? I'll have to track down sources on this, but I'm pretty sure Sherpas (spelling?) can go much longer at much higher altitudes without artificial aids than even well-aclimated lowlanders.
No I don't, as you can see from my final sentence. Evolutionary adaption and aclimatization are two different processes. Adaption effects entire breeding populations over many generations (In an evolutionary sense, individuals don't adapt, they vary). Aclimatization to altitude seems very hit and miss on an individual basis. Some people aclimatize well, other don't. Fitness helps a lot, but it doesn't guarantee that you won't suffer from altitude sickness.

Indeed. Slip of the brain.
By the way, its 'environment' not 'enviroment'
