Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

That's my main problem with all this. When TSHTF people will certainly start up victory gardens but if fertilizer and herbicides become cost prohibitive, it will seem like a great experiment at first but they will just quickly deplete their yard's soil unless they find a way to close the loop.

Urban Source for manure? Smile

The Sonoma City Council voted unanimously to allow residents to keep 16 chickens and 8 rabbits regardless of property size and larger numbers of the animals on larger lots. But it amended the measure to ban roosters, citing the possibility of noise complaints. The proposal will go before the Council on Sept. 3 for final approval. Supporters said the idea was part of a movement for healthier, locally grown food. They also said it would reduce the need to transport food and lessen Sonoma’s carbon footprint.

Add humanure leaves from trees and let the earthworms recover from years of pesticides and the like and maybe that loop could be tied.

You still would not be able to get all of your food from a city lot, but every little bit helps.

IMHO, the southwest is hosed because of a lack of water. Things are getting desperate right now. They are already starting a program of toilet-to-tap. Poster boy for regional overshoot.

We have a lot of food-stealing critters around here. The other night the raccoons (sort of the north american version of monkeys, though not primates) stole some chickens we were going to eat. They also ate some of my melons. I don't ever want to have to eat raccoon, though I guess some people do. Raccoons also live in the cities and will eat garden produce and chickens there too.
