Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening.
Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

Well, upthread I posted about how Reno, a nearby city, equaled an all-time record for consecutive days of 90 degrees or higher. That string was broken by one 86 degree day, then was followed by the hottest weather of the summer. Here I recorded 101, 103, 103, 104, then the heatwave "collapsed" today with a high 0f only 91, following the most horrendous dust storm I've ever experienced, last night. Now the computer keyboard is clogged with fine silt. Supposed to be mild for a few days, then another possibly record-breaking heat wave next weekend...Rained a few drops this morning. _________________ "When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon."

In the Edmonton, Alberta area, we have just had the warmest, mid-August stretch of weather on record - several days of above 30 C with yesterday at 34 C. That is very unusual for Alberta in August. One thing I've noticed this year is that we've been having thunderstorms since the end of April, and we have them in a temperature range of about 14 to 34 C. Years ago, if the temperature was in the lower part of that range, say, 14 to 20, we would have just rain, not storms. We had quite a lightning show two nights ago. One unlucky family's home was hit and burned to the ground.

They should have lived in a high-rise eco-condo instead.

I know how good that feels, Ludi. Congrats!
Here, things continue to be sere. I don't have to pump out my pond anymore to work on it---it's drying up on its own. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Rained here for the first time in about 2 weeks, too, after being scorched like Alberta for a few days. We're just not used to 90 degrees F, in the NorthWest. The plants are smiling, the deer are relieved.

Hey all,
If those superstorm cells did not hit this past Monday night, I'll be darned. This was an amazing display by nature that she is NOT to be fooled with. I am still shaking after 2 days at all the damage in our area.
Go gentle...

Drought conditions here have rapidly deteriorated during August. We're now in D2 (severe) drought, or close to it. Some trees are dropping their leaves prematurely in an effort to conserve moisture. Earlier this year I thought our drought was over, but really it was just taking a breather.
A TV weatherman said that Charlottesville has so far had the driest August in its weather-record-keeping history.
There is some chance for moisture from Fay recurving toward our area later this week. Clearly it has put a major dent in the SE drought at the lower latitudes of its range, but much of the range has been relatively untouched by Fay because of the enormous power of the blocking highs.
When will the SE drought end? When CAN it end? For the past two years I haven't looked at the following map without seeing those big ugly patches of yellow, red, and brown all over the Southeast like a skin disease. It's incredible.
Actually it looks as though half or more than half of the lower 48 is abnormally dry or in drought.

Are you in Virginia? I'm in western Loudoun about 4 miles from the Blue Ridge. The drought here is getting worse, no rain for about 3 weeks now.

We've had a mild summer here. Right now, at 9:57 am, it is only 66 degrees. Yesterday morning, when I woke up, it was 58! _________________ "RRrrruuuunnnn!!!" ~Apocalypto

Central Virginia, about halfway between Richmond and C'ville.
We've had virtually no rain all August, and June and July were rather dry as well, and hot as Hades.
A belated welcome to the site, Farknight. If you feel like it, identify your rough geographic location under your handle. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Nice, Ferretlover. As I reported upthread, on the 17th it was 104 here. Well that same morning the low was 49. The day before, it was 103/49 also. Today we had our county fair parade in town. Only here could you get 5 Izuzu Troopers entered into a parade because...well, they're the only 5 Izuzu Troopers in town. In contrast we also hosted the Budweiser Clydesdale beer wagon--go figure. Went woodcutting with a friend up into the forest, as the fire danger was "only " high, therefore permitting woodcutting all day. Last time out, we left a tall slender Lodgepole Pine hung up in a thick forest, after removing 15 feet or so from the bottom, then chickening out. Also found a fine specimen of dead Lodegepole, some 3 feet DBH, that somebody had "felled" earlier in the summer, but left still standing as it would not fall down, being intertangled with other old-growth giant White Firs. Well, the big windstorm we experienced in the interim took down both trees, so today we were able to return with a full load from these blowdowns. I'd estimate the winds to do this must have been 60 to 70 mph. Looking back over my temperature records here, for the past 7 years, August used to have 10-15 days above 90 degrees. The past 3 years have seen 20-30 days in August above 90 degrees. _________________ "When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon."
