Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

Good points.
Yes, I do want to have fun. It's just a little harder now, you know? Every time I see a semi truck driving down the road, or hear a plane in the sky, or go to the gas station down the road, or see oil stains on the street, it reminds me of PO.
Well, to cheer myself up I like to think that maybe tomorrow some scientist will figure out fusion, or drillers will stumble upon a superpowerful energy source, or aliens will finally reveal themselves and share their advanced technology with us. Hey, it could happen, even though I'm 99.9999999 percent sure it won't.
I have encountered this issue in the past, and I have found out that comparint it to the worst-case survivavle situation, the modern world for al of its wastes is heaven compared to what is to rear its ugly head in the near future. I used to have an incredible amount of worry regarding the present wastfulness of our society, but once I realised that in as little as 10 years it could, (and IMHO will be), much worse than even the hardest of situatons currently presents us, I am quite at peace with seeing the jet planes, tractors, semi-trucks, and SUV's burning off the one time gift granted in the history of humanity. Compared to worrying about whether you will get too much rain, (or not enough as is the case this year, {dust stormes have started a month early here}, in order to feed your crops to survive yet another hellacious year is much less desireable than the current worries of if I have enough money to pay for the gas to get to work to make more money, (which it is a very close call having been forced to seek other employment recently).
What would you rather worry about, how to feed yourself for the next year while being dependant upon the current weather conditoins, or whether or not some guy is being an asshole at work today? As far as I am concerned, I would rather worry about the guy being an asshole for one more day. This modern life is an absoute piece of heaven when compared to what is to come, so my advice is to simply enjoy it while it lasts, because it is coming to an end very shortly. I presume you live a life of luxary compared to the rest of the world, (as I do), so why worry about how you are burning your allocated hydrocarbons, and worry about something that you cannot change? Even if you were to completly eliminate all of your personal hydrocarbon usage, (which is extremtly doubtful), how long do you think you would postpone the arrival of PO? Maybe by a couple seconds, given the best scenario. Since there is virtually nothing you can do to alter the outcome, or total amount of time remaining for hydrocarbon extraction, you might as well party like it is the end of time, (because it just may be)! _________________ Here Lies the United States Of America.

How would it benefit humans to continue our culture's current destructive way of life?
I'm not seeing how that could be a good thing for us or anything else on the planet.
"Unfortunately, the neighborhood rules say you can't plant vegetables, which doesn't make a damn bit of sense. "
I totally agree with you. But you have to be smart. There is a veggie the British call "runner beans" which has pretty flowers. In Sweden, people plant it for the flowers, the British eat the green beans. Plant it and call it ornamental. There are also kale varieties that look like ornamental plants. There are probably others. Squash has big, pretty flowers too. Sunflowers - you can eat the seeds. And jerusalem artichokes - tall plants with yellow flowers, you eat the root part. Do you have a patio or balkony where you can have a tomato plant in a container? A container plant needs regular water, though, so you can not leave it for long.
Teenagers are supposed to be behavioral neighborhood terrors, breaking all the rules. How wonderful to be able to make a statement just by digging into the ground, planting a potatoe! Are your mother very afraid of what the neighbors will say? You must have her on your side before doing a growing-veggies-rebellion. Aside from caring about your relationship, your plants are defenseless if she gets mad and pulls them up. Can it be science project?
what i'm more interested in is why americans called their Mum 'MOM'.
Mom is short for mommy. Mum is short for? . . .?
Mummy: . . . a: a body embalmed or treated for burial with preservatives after the manner of the ancient Egyptians. b: a body unusually well preserved. . .
Good ideas. Come to think of it, I don't know how they (the people in charge of the neighborhood) would find out anyway. They don't ever check or anything.
My mom has planted sunflowers before. Pretty tall ones, too. I've got a deck at the back of my house, with a large sliding glass door. Maybe I could take advantage of that and turn it into an effective passive solar system. Tear up the carpet, put those special warming bricks there, and BAM! Cheaper heating.
Back to the deck, my mom's already got plants out there as I speak. I can see them from here. I'll try the decorative plants idea. Oh, and there's a medium-sized tree in our backyard. I'm not sure what kind. It has thin, swaying branches, and they're all pointed upwards, none hang down. And there's small leaves growing from the branches. I don't think our yard's big enough to grow a fruit tree. It would have to be a small one. And somehow I don't think my mom would take too kindly to me chopping her precious tree down.
I'm probably alone in this or one of very few, that believe that the absolutely very best thing you can do is to educate yourself. In this day and age knowledge is free or very cheap, the internet, your library, bookstores, etc. You can never really own anything that you can't hold in your arms and run away with. Thats not to say that you shouldn't have a few weeks or months of food and water stored at all times. But no matter how well you plan, stock, store, hoard your supplies, someone stronger, meaner, tougher can and will take them from you when TSHTF. Knowledge is the one thing no one can steal from you. Start out on the lowest rung of the ladder, learn to make fire without matches, learn to construct expedient shelters, learn to identify at least a half dozen tasty and nutritious wild edible plants in your area. Realize that that fat little dog waddling down the alley, the old lady down the street with 21 cats on her front porch, all those plump pidgeons strutting around the park benches, all and I mean all, are excellent sources of free protein. For Pete's sake don't kill anyone's pet NOW, I'm talking when TSHTF. You'll be amazed how quickly you can learn and how comforting it is knowing that you can survive the same way people did for thousands of years. And when you feel comfortable playing "caveman" kick it up a notch. There's a world of knowledge to be gathered and shared pertaining to gardening, farming, animal husbandry, carpentry, power generation, etc. There are some extremely knowledgeable people on this board and most will help you willingly with any questions you have. Just don't assume that because you don't have solar panels on your roof, 2 years worth of freeze-dried food, or 10 thousand rounds of ammo stored in your concrete fall-out shelter, that means you're gonna die. Bullcrap! The more you can learn NOW, the better you can live LATER.
