Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening.
Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

What does your gut tell you?
If you're that undecided then perhaps you should wait. Maybe the right place hasn't presented itself yet. _________________ Conservation is conservative

I'm going to see each location and then see how I feel. I'm thinking that Quebec would be the best in terms of not having to get citizenship and being with a decent group of people. It's hard to say, just wanted to see what people thought of it all.

My friend in Norway has hooked me up with a job that pays 30$ an hour starting. I'm going to apply for it and see how it goes. If I get accepted I'll try out for a work visa then I'll go for permanent resident then hopefully a citizen. I'll get a small apartment and save about 1500$ CDN a month. I'm also planning on putting an advertisement in a local paper asking if anyone would like a young worker to help them on the farm in exchange for food and shelter. I'll keep the job and work on the farm in my free time, grow a garden etc.
How does this sound to everyone? I'm apprehensive about it but I think it's my best bet. I think that once Canada is absorbed into the United States, things are not going to be very pretty in this part of the world.

I thought I would give a little update since the thread hasn't seen a pulse in quite some time.
I've saved up about $12,000 as of now although the money is going very quickly.
$600 for a well made German back pack and a small tent. $350 for 6 months worth of overseas health insurance, 900$ for my flight from Edmonton to Quebec City/ Montreal to Munich, $600 for a Germany-Switzerland/Scandinavia rail pass ...add in some other random incremental charges and it'll basically be around $4000 before I leave the country..
I've found several places to visit in Quebec which look very promising. An ecocommunity near the Saguenay fjord and an ecovillage called Mont Radar. Mont Radar looks less appealing by the day since they are selling land for $20,000 (a piece!) and don't seem like they want to budge! This other community will sell land MUCH cheaper to those who are deemed 'worthy'.
From Montreal I will fly to Munich (towards the end of September) and spend 2 months in both Germany and Switzerland visiting friends and a cousin.
From Germany to Denmark (in December ) to visit the Svanholm ecovillage and several other ecocommunities in the country (Denmark is FULL of them!) The Scandinavia train pass allows me to travel for 5 days on train within 1 month. I think I will visit Finland, Sweden and Norway while I can before going to Karmoy. Once in Karmoy, I'll have to chose between a job in Karmoy or going back to Denmark to work in X ecovillage.
Just curious what everyone thinks. I'll make sure to write about my experiences and keep you posted on peak-oil friendly ecocommunities.

I would NOT choose Europe as a Survival Location. The Ruskies are already holding the EU hostage with their takeover of the Georgian Pipeline. Europe has already been the battleground for 2 world wars, you can only figure it will be again.
Canada is as good as Europe, for sure, and at least you are ALREADY a Canadian citizen. No major expenses or language changes necessary there. Living with an old Prof on his subsistence farm doesn't sound too great, but maybe you could bring along a couple of cute co-eds to make the time pass better?
My choice was the Last Great Frontier, Alaska. So far removed from the rest of civilization its not even funny. Its cold and its tough, but not many live here right now. The small community I live in is not an "eco-village", and if it does all go down the toilet it sure won't be easy scraping by up here. On the other hand, I seriously doubt I will have Zombies to worry about. Bears maybe, Zombies no.

What should I say Nicholai? You have done your homework. However I would have to recommend against Europe and I believe you will agree with me once you have visited. Hope you have a great time here though.
Try to visit the Orkney Islands(UK), it's one of the places I'm considering moving to.
If you ever get stuck in Europe or you're in Stuttgart(Germany) drop me a line. _________________ April 2008 Global Population: 6.8 billion

Gah, it's such a hard decision.
Canada has such shitty ecovillages. We have tons of space, a low population density, some of the most fertile land on the planet and yet the only ecovillages here are either: brand new, expensive, VERY reliant on the 'grid', survive on eco tourism, or are VERY expensive to join....
In Europe, despite the enormous population density, you have some of the nicest ecovillages in the world. They are: older, well financed, organized etc. (not all, but you have a great deal more to chose from as well)
Who knows, if I like it in Quebec I might just stay but it's hard to say. Canceling the flight, the health insurance AND the Eurail pass might cost me a whole ton of money.....we'll see.....

I don't want to be rude, but why do you want to come to Europe? Because we have good eco villages? They are not good eco villages because they are surrounded by hundreds of millions of potential zombies!
A good place for an eco village would be a vast sparesly populated country... I know, CANADA!
I don't intend to be rude but have you fully considered creating your own eco-village in Canada? Land is cheap as chips, 40 acres in the EU would cost you a few million unless it was infertile. You will have no citisenship issues, your family will have somewhere to go when times get bad and a whole bag of reasons why its a good idea. _________________ April 2008 Global Population: 6.8 billion

There are some 'ecohamlets' in Quebec that I would still like to visit, so I shouldn't count Canada out completely.
I think people who talk about North America as a safe place to be are also the same people who haven't spent a great deal of time here. North America (Canada and the US) are extremely boring...but I suppose that in a crash scenario 'boring' might not be such a bad thing. The temperature is also fairly cold and the growing season can be on and off. Droughts are common in my province and Quebec can have some pretty severe snow storms.
I do have cousins in Denmark so I wouldn't be too worried about being 'all alone' but the population density really does scare me. The citizenship issue is also a tough egg to crack. I'll have to visit Quebec and Europe and go with my gut....who's the one with the quote, "Peak oil is like a shitty tasting gob stopper that stays in your mouth forever..." I'm kinda feeling like that right now....I'm not as worried as I was when oil was $147 a barrel but I just know that I only have a year or two at most to really buckle down and learn my stuff....I just wish I wasn't a 19 year old kid with pimples and a debit card sometimes haha....

I would take the trip if you've already paid for it. You'll never get another chance to travel, and who knows? Even if you don't stay in Europe you may make contacts or learn something that will help you. _________________ Conservation is conservative

Nicholai,
Best of luck with whatever you decide to choose. It won't be the last time to make one of those "life-path" decisions. I moved around a bit when I was younger too, and felt the experiences strengthened me. Eventually you will find the right spot and continue from there.
