I found some vodka. Goes well with lime. I hope the peaches do better next year. Peach schnapps can't be that bad...
I had to celebrate the lime somehow:
Some peach trees are in the background.
My incognito look.

Today I finally got some pictures of a hummingbird. Here is one of them:
Those little birds really like the citrus blossoms. That's a new lemon next to the bird.
Edited to add one more picture:
Edit: I had to add the Monty Python joke:
"No, no sir. It's not dead. It's resting, look!"
"Resting?"
"Yeah, remarkable bird, the (hummingbird). Beautiful plumage, innit."

Cool... Hummingbirds are my favorite... next to owls... My 3 whole peaches weren't quite ready, but i picked them anyways... Still excellent tasting....unique flavor, unlike any store bought peach.
Have 3 seeds now for 3 trees next spring...
One seedling i don't think will make it, but the other 5 have done great. They'll need to be pruned if they make it through winter.
What i'm looking at...

Would rather spend my money on an electric motor instead of going the gas scooter route. Have a perfect Trek hybrid type bike to put this on. _________________ Clothing should be optional. |

It is very difficult to get a good picture of hummingbirds or other pollinators. It's fun to watch the hummingbirds chase each other around the citrus blossoms. They fight and chirp over them.
I predict your peach yield will be better next year frankthetank.

Here is a strange for you more experienced peach tree owners.
We have three peach trees in our orchard. One was planted in the original planting of 40 trees three years ago. Two were planted the next year to replace some others that did not take two years ago. This year two of the trees flowered and set fruit, the three year old and one of the two year olds. Both are Elberta peach. Both trees yielded about a bushel of peaches.
Here is the oddity. The newer tree's fruit matured almost a month before the older tree. We just picked the older tree's fruit today.
The tree that ripened earlier is just about 40 feet from the later, older tree and is in the northern most row of the orchard.
Any ideas? _________________ "Modern Agriculture is the use of land to convert petroleum into food."

My guess is different soil conditions. Older trees seem to respond to weather differently too. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

In 2007, I harvested 38 lemons from three potted trees. So far in 2008, I've harvested 32 lemons, and a few of the 24+ lemons counted last month are turning yellow. Most of the lemons are still small and green. More fruits were made last month with the help of the hummingbirds. It would be nice to see almost a doubling of the lemon yield.
Only three satsuma tangerines are on one tree and they're still green and getting bigger. Five limes have been harvested. Four limes are still on one tree and I have a bottle of tequila now! Five grapefruit are on the way too.
This winter, all the citrus come in the house, right next to the pineapple plants! _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Lime update from two young potted trees:
2007: Number = 13, total weight = 1146 grams (2.52 lbs)
Final 2008: Number = 11, total weight = 1126 grams (2.48 lbs)
This winter, they can stay in the house... _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Today I harvested and ate the first satsuma tangerine of the season. Delicious! Only two left.
The yield was a tenth from last year. As I've mentioned above, I think they got too cold this last winter and slowed growth down too much.
Two lemons were harvested about a week ago and 32 lemons are still left among the three trees. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Peakoiler-
Do your peach trees turn like mine?
They actually were really pretty. Too bad they are about the last tree to turn color in this area. Last year they just feel off green because it got too cold too early.
**hopefully** this winter isn't as brutal as last and i can get them through with a lot of healthy buds for a good crop next year.
After the bug/fungus problems with my other trees... The peaches stand out as the most problem free of my trees, the apples coming in second... The bugs love the plums and the fungus loved my sour cherries. _________________ Clothing should be optional. |

Seen below are some of the peach trees and some of the citrus on the deck. (See the lemons?)
As you can tell, some peach leaves have fallen, some are still green. I will drag the rest of the potted citrus into the house within the next couple of weeks. I need to get some new plastic pans first. Those cheap plastic drain pans have a tendency to split or crack after a year or so.
At least you have some green grass, frankthetank. All mine dried up and blew away. (We're still in extreme drought here. I did get about 0.6" of rain this morning though. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

It was pretty crusty in Aug/Sept.
Very dry this year compared to previous years. Since July we are nearing 8 inches below normal on rainfall.
Today we are getting freezing rain and there are accidents all over _________________ Clothing should be optional. |

Droughts bite. I saw on the weather news the other day that Austin has received about 15" rain this year. Normal is about 32" for the year. I get the feeling that we will not receive 17" of rain in the next 6 weeks...nor would we want to... _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

This is a reply to gnm's question in the Canning thread:
The Home Depot in Georgetown, TX has a bunch of citrus; navel orange, Meyer's lemon, and satsuma tangerines. $30. Some are almost six ft tall. Perhaps you could call your local HD and see if they would ship some to you. No telling how much shipping might be.
I think Home Depot gets their citrus from the Rio Grande Nursery in south Texas. _________________ About my avatar: Guess. |

Good idea, I will check with them. I know the Lowes/HD's here don't have them. Perhaps I'll contact the supplier directly.
Thanks,
