Light Sweet Crude Oil

Member Quotes
Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening. Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

There's just so many ways it could go down.

Other: a combination of famine caused by peak oil and global warming, with epidemics and pandemics thrown in for good measure. Most death will be from disease rather than outright starvation.

Epidemic(s), brought on and exacerbated by increased poverty and famine in an overcrowded world.

2nd place: nukes. I was torn but went with disease.

Ah, this grasshopper feels minute with the new Shannymara avatar. You go!

My vote is none of the above as a sole reason. I expect we will do a varied version of all of the above with a surprise twist.

So many to choose from ! It's hard to go wrong with disease, I'll have to go with disease. But I'll say pestilence cause it sounds cooler.

I voted for resource depletion, and here's why:

- oil: supply << demand, leading to unrest, food/water disruptions, and issues with everything from transportation to health care supplies leading to even more deaths (just think about what all is made with plastic). TPTB know this and have been frantically maneuvering their way into where they think the oil is most plentiful for years, thus leading to more deaths due to war.

- potable water: supply << demand, leading to unrest, food/water disruptions, possibly wars fought over water supply, and deaths due to lack of clean water/illness.

- food: supply will become << demand in spots, leading to unrest, and more deaths due to hunger, rioting (and the inevitable police response), and illness.

- rare metals: supply is already < demand, leading to the stripping of homes/buildings/etc. for metals, thefts, etc. Sooner or later this is going to get ugly.

I'm sure there's more but you get the picture.

I voted Global Thermo-nuclear War because while I agree disease might kill more in the long run I think nuclear war will be the place disease gets its toehold in Europe and North America. We have held off disease for decades because we have the medical infrastructure to do so, one little nuclear war takes out that infra structure and out population from the Ural mountains west to California is going to be ravaged by disease.

Just like solutions to our energy crisis, the solutions to our over population is that there are no silver bullets, only many silver BB's.

My answer: all of the above, but not in my lifetime
