Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening.
Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

This year has been quite unusual in central thailand. Normally between may and October it rains for a few hours every day dropping 50 to 150 mm a time over bangkok city.
This year it only rains every 5 to 7 days and for less than an hour also the average temps are higher and cloud levels are lower (ie more hazy or light blue sky days). The weather is similar to that of the late hot season april not the rainy season. Although up north has had its worst flooding in 40 years.
There has even been days of over 40 C 104 F in july when its normally never above 34 C 93F. The average at the moment is around 35C 95F when its normally 32C 90F for August. In late july there was a single day of 43C 109 F with 90% humidity normally we only get this kind of crap in april where it can last for month.
Is a reduction in south east Asian monsoon rains related to increasing temps and climate change???
I remember reading about an 8C increase in global temps if its like this now its going to be even when that 8C increase comes that 43 C will become 51 C 124F and the normal 34 C 93F will be 42 C 107 F.
Without aircon everywhere bangkok and mahachai will be too hot to live in for most of the year after this temp increase. I hope this never happens.

I believe I read a article by "The Union of Concerned Scientist" that had stated as such before. It seems reasonable that changes may occur, after all, weather patterns have shifted through history with variations in temperatures. I'm a little concerned by how wild the weather has been, but that's just anecdotal, I can't pretend to be a expert on the subject. _________________ "Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb."

Don't worry once the Gulf of Mexico extends north to the Ozark hills of Arkansas there will be a lot more moisture in the winds traveling over Virginia. _________________ Always appeal to a man's enlightened self interest, you can trust him to look out for himself honestly, It's when you appeal to his Honor or the Common Good that he stops paying attention.

Thanks for giving me more hope, Tanada.
A very feeble rain from Fay has finally reached us, as I write this. More like a drizzle that would prefer to just stop. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Well, Fay hasn't done too bad for north Georgia...3-4" storm totals around here, much higher in the Lake Lanier basin, which was sorely needed after yet another (sigh) bone-dry summer. Most rain we've had all summer.
I still wonder if I should have traded the economic opportunity / low-cost living of Atlanta for living in the more stable, ideal climate of upstate New York back on '04 when I was preparing to make my escape from the death trap of south Florida. These days, I've got my sights set on southern Ontario....those guys had the wettest summer ever...man, that's my kind of climate! Not to mention all that free health care and high-paying jobs to boot.
For now, however, I've got my hopes pinned on Gustav...maybe that bad boy will spin on up to a Cat 4 and come straight up the Alabama / GA line and really break the back of this 3 -year drought. I can dream, right? _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

Round about February you'll begin to wonder whether the climate of upstate NY is so ideal, Byron. I share your frustrations, though, as you know.
I'm ready to become a citizen of Canada, but I doubt if they'd have me, a 52-yo has-been. It's no simple matter getting a piece of that health care etc. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Hi Heineken. Your rain is here in New England. Would you like us to return it? Gladly.
The corn is stunted. The squash and pumpkins are dead and rotten. The tomatoes don't ripen: they just go soft and stinky. The peaches are watery. The cukes and melons have mold. The potatoes died. There's mold on the woodwork. The cellar won't dry out. The hay hasn't been cut, and what we try to cut and rake up sits in standing water.
This after a solid week of warm, clear, dry weather. It was so lousy from July into August that we're still trying to recover. Luckily, my gardens have a super-redundancy built into them. Canning proceeds, just not up to par. _________________ "By the time individuals discover that remaining resources will not be adequate for the next generation, the next generation has already been born. Agreed, KJ. Too much rain is as bad as too little, maybe even worse. Extremes are bad, and we seem to be entering an age of extremes.
My brother, who lives in Boston, says rain has been in the forecast nearly every day there all summer long, and that it's been cool as a . . . . rotten cucumber.
The Canadians on this site keep telling us what a wet cool summer they've had.
At the same time, Arctic sea ice continues to recede to a record low.
For us it's been ANOTHER sere summer, to the point that a few wells are going dry. No relief from Fay, as I write this. Just a spattering of droplets. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Too bad about Fay not being a big producer for you, Heineken ...perhaps some of NC's rains have yet to make it over where you are?
I agree with the extremes...too wet up north and too dry down here...it's been 3 years since the drought started here in GA...just after Katrina, in fact. I do feel that it'll take a major cyclone moving north somewhere in eastern N America to bust up this desert-like pattern we've had here so long. Right now, I've got my bets laid out on Gustav, but there's hopes that new systems will follow suit...so let's keep them coming!
Just got me a rain gauge today, so I can keep track of how much rain I'm getting in my yard...the readings I'm seeing at nearby PDK are totally bogus, IMO...hehe. As far as I can tell, the 5-day total for around here is between 3.5 to 4 inches...enough to bring August right up to normal rainfall. Not enough to break the drought, but it's a start at least. Sure wish Gustav would get off its butt off Haiti and come on up here where a very warm welcome awaits him. _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

We've received about a third of an inch so far, Byron. It's stopped for now, but the radar (my favorite weather tool) shows more coming, I think.
A third of an inch is nothing to dance for joy about, but I'll take it after almost no rain this whole month. It's been a slow, soaking type of rain, so we've made maximum mileage out of this meager rain.
I have a rain gauge too and love to monitor it. Be sure to mount it well away from trees and buildings! And bring it indoors in freezing weather. Any water in it can freeze and crack the plastic (or glass). Enjoy.
Gustav is definitely the real news right now. All we can do is watch and wait and see. Hopefully no people or pets will die in the US. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

That's my idea of heaven right now, to experience one whole summer of rain 24/7...with just enough sun in the middle to dry out a bit...hehe. Any place on this planet in which such a summer is remotely possible sounds like a very good place to live right about now, that's for sure.
Heineken - I hope you're at least over an inch by now, at least. Getting a bit worried that it may be quite some time before my new rain gauge sees some action though, as they're calling for Gustav to head west of NO now, even well inland...these brutal high pressure systems just won't budge. :/ And even if Hanna develops into a hurricane, it threatens to do the same damn thing!
Let's see if we can get three hurricanes to make a run at the fortress of high pressure and get it out of there...
This, my friends, is climate change in action. _________________ Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide...

We received exactly 2 inches, Byron. A decent rain after all, but not a drought-buster.
Just west of here, Charlottesville received 5 inches.
There's a big low parked over Virginia right now. For once.
Gustav could end up anywhere. The projected track for a hurricane almost always keeps shifting, day by day. I think some part of the New Orleans stuff is hype, therefore. A direct hit is obviously possible but very unlikely. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

First of September tomorrow - hope it will be better than August
What was Neil Diamond singing about in Hot August Night ??.
Apart from 1 or 2 sunny days, warm(ish), but grey, cloudy, miserable most days this month. Quite a bit of rain too. (Raining now). Its true that sunny days make you feel better. or, rather they used to do.
Not had ONE hot, sultry night needing all windows open & cooling fans on this year. NOT ONE.
Roll on winter. Scraping the frost off the car windscreen, and the big heating bills to come.
Off to sunny Thailand in October, while the big birds still fly.
