Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening.
Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

I'm sure glad I live in Texas! If we could just get rid of Gov. Goodhair it would be a much better place.
If the US breaks up I do believe Texas could be self- sustaining. We grow our own food, could export oil, and have the ability to defend our borders. These are not things the US can do.
I can see it now, mass deportations of illegal aliens back to California, Oklahoma and Louisiana! _________________ A man should never wear a hat that has more character than he does.

'Texas is a whole 'nother country' is right. Texas' infrastructure has always been designed to be independent from the rest of the nation's. If the country breaks down, Texas will be able to keep it together longer then most other states. Texas took the brunt of the Katrina refugees and was able to handle the load. When America breaks up, Texas will be it's own nation.

I think there are a few regions of the US that could very easily break off and do quiet well.
1) Great Plains: Enough land to farm food for their populations(Which arent as large as the other regions) and they have strong dense cities such as KC and maybe STL(But it is debatable whether or not STL is in the great plains or midwest).
2) Texas: The region has enough food to feed its current population and has enough resources to over all maintain a decent way of life. I'm not sure if over all the condition of groups other than white protestants would be living so well but over all it could economically manage.
3) Great Lake states: The great lake states are rich in resources and have a very sophisticated rail network. Many of the towns were designed and populated before sprawl and the auto and could manage very well. The rivers and lakes also allow good trade routes.
I don't see how regions like the West Coast, New England, or the SouthEast could sustain their current populations without imports from the regions mentioned above. As great as they are, they depend heavily on the production of other regions.

OK neighbor, you send some food our way and we'll send you uranium and industrial/rare metals. We're good on the oil/NG ourselves... (New Mexico)

and unless you own those minerals, i think the owners will make the decision about where to sell them. I would bet they go to the highest bidder not some NM entitiy.

Umm, NM had thriving trade, mining and farming communities as far back as 1600. And indigenous farming communities for centuries before that.
If we were talking about a split up of the country, NM has sufficient resources in oil, NG and minerals to be an exporter, but would probably not be able to produce enough food.

Resmussen reports;
Quote:
The percentage of voters who give Congress good or excellent ratings has fallen to single digits for the first time in Rasmussen Reports tracking history. This month, just 9% say Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Most voters (52%) say Congress is doing a poor job, which ties the record high in that dubious category.

ANTONY:
Blood and destruction shall be so in use
And dreadful objects so familiar
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quarter'd with the hands of war;
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds:
And Caesar's spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Our imperfect human leaders make mistakes and we citizens have little or no recourse to fix those mistakes. That is why revolutions come about for change. But we must be careful about what we are revolting against, as what we replace it with may be worse than what we have destroyed.
BTW, if and when America is ready for a revolt over the travesty of American political system, all you have to do is to follow the lead of our politicians and do nothing. America can be shut down by the citizens - just by doing nothing.
When it comes down to it, we are dependent on strong government to keep the invading armies at bay. But everyday life is NOT dependent on the politicians flapping their jaws and blowing hot air out their ass. What we are dependent on is each other and our cooperation at making life livable from the lowest crap shoveler and up the ladder to the highest doctor or airline pilot.
In the end, I choose a democracy of sorts and when the democracy fails them replace it with bits and pieces of socialized areas, but all the while trying to keep the democratic foundation and as much personal freedoms in force best we can.
But coming back to reality this gives a glimpse of how engaged the citizens of the US of A are: link
lets look at another forum with lots of traffic...except when it comes to activism: link
Well, maybe next time around the country would be more energized. Of course this presupposes we have the gas and the planes will still be flying so we can get to the conventions to voice our disgust about this putrid mess we call the American political system.

100% agree with this - same for over here to. Had enough of the trough feeders on both sides of the pond.

Its encouraging to see Americans finally getting pissed off and openly calling for revolution.

The other option, the one I have long prayed we would never need to even consider, is a total revolution. But, If Congress won't act in its own self-defense, in the defense of democracy, in defense of us - the people who have elected them to protect us from this very danger - then what is left for us to do? I don't want to see it come down to this, but I fear that it will. Put your party politics aside right now. We are in a crisis so dangerous that should these people succeed in their coup, your party affiliation will no longer matter, your American flag will be a nice collectible item of something that once was, and your version of God will be worshiped in secrecy because your freedoms will be owned by the few.

Yes, grassroots need to start making noice as their elect representatives won't.
I am however thinking that a breakup of the states would be a nicer way of going than armed uprising. Then of course there may still be a need to do some purging of corrupt politicians but I suspect this would be easier after a breakup.
Does anyone know what happened to....was it Oklahoma that was planning to breakout and already had it go through several seatings in the state senate? _________________ It's not a bailout, it's a buy-in" - Nancy Pelosi

The American public is already pretty revolting. I don't think they need to do anything. _________________ "Modern Agriculture is the use of land to convert petroleum into food."
