YES FOLKS we're here, ahead of schedule. Oh well. things could be worse.
| Quote: | Arctic sea ice has shrunk to the second smallest extent since satellite records began, US scientists have revealed.
The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) says that the ice-covered area has fallen below its 2005 level, which was the second lowest on record.
Melting has occurred earlier in the year than usual, meaning that the iced area could become even smaller than last September, the lowest recorded.
Researchers say the Arctic is now at a climatic "tipping point".
"It's tipping now. We're seeing it happen now," he told the Associated Press news agency.
That will bring economic opportunities, including the chance to drill for oil and gas. Burning that oil and gas would increase levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere still further. |

The loss of the Arctic sea ice will cause warming of all the Arctic and sub-Arctic. Already, its MUCH warmer in Alaska----I've spent most of the summer in shorts, except when I went on a fishing trip and visited oil facilities in Cook Inlet.
In the near term, we can expect acceleration of the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet---in the longer term, as Greenland melts, we'll see about a 5 m (15+ foot) sea level rise. |

| well this has mainly been the trend the last couple of thousand years. what is "the tipping point" when it continues as it has for thousand of years? |

It's a scientific term of the consequences, that there will be no going back (for millions of years possibly). It is because of all the positive feedbacks that are greater than the negative feedbacks.
The engineering analog is an oscillator.
While it can't be stopped (if we are over a tipping point), I see no reason to make it happen any quicker.
What will happen is global temperatures 10-20 C higher and sea levels 100-200 m higher (I'll pulling numbers from recollection only here). But you get the gist. |

yep, that's goodbye to NYC, the Eastern seaboard and obviously all coatal cities and those within 50 to 100 miles of the coast and it all began in earnest when the Arctic hit tipping point which was now 2008. thanks for all the fish _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSFLSTb5KfU

It thought it was Bingo.
Did someone say "economic opportunities"? Billions of people relocating will need housing. Expect surreal CNBC panel discussions soon. _________________ Cogito, ergo non satis bibivi

It began thousand of years ago, and the sealeavels were a lot lower then. One could walk from sweden to england. Were there now is ocean there were forests.
And, if I recollect correct the maximun rise of the ocean in 70 meter if all ice in the world melts. Not that it matters mutch. |
