Any evidence that the Kremlin is planning to use the oil weapon to intimidate the West could inflame global energy markets. US crude prices jumped to $119 a barrel yesterday on reports of hurricane warnings in the Gulf of Mexico, before falling back slightly.

Russia may be waiting for our response in Georgia - and also - if Hurricane Gus causes the US to beg for supplies from Europe (which actually happened in 2005).
I don't know the odds of this Russian shut off really happening, but in the worst case scenario, the price of oil won't matter. Because, at least here in the States, the free market for oil will be closed - maybe for good.
Previously I predicted in this forum that government imposed shutdowns of the energy markets wouldn't phase in until 2010. _________________ It's already over, now it's just a matter of adjusting.

It is likely this is a contest to see who blinks first. The Russians know the precarious state of the Western financial system. To shut Europe off would be initiating a global financial meltdown. Russia is not immune, her economy is tied very strongly to Europe and European demand for gas and oil.
Russia sees Georgia as an expatriated Russian province inside the Russian sphere of influence. When push comes to shove, Europe will blink.
As far as the US federal government taking over the energy industry in this country, without a war, the states would never stand for it. Without state co-operation all the Home Land Security in the world is going to have a very hard time enforcing much control over oil and gas.
If you thought prohibition was something, wait until the feds try to cut off gasoline. The Al Capones will be crawling out of the wood work.

I think you'll need to factor in what China is doing before making to clear a prediction on what Russia may do.

A lot of hyperventilating for naught; Russia won't throw away their source of income, as Europe won't cave to whisper campaigns that would buy Russia little. And Schlumberger is propping up their oil industry with 1000s of contract workers who would have to become thralls; not even a mid term solution, much less a long term. And Putin would be playing into the hands of Bush/McCain with their 'drill here, drill now' myth, which would get McCain elected, which Putin likely doesn't want to see. Besides, the SCO has denied him the support he was seeking on Georgia, so he knows now is not the time to push his hand, as he is currently isolated and all of his levers are not yet in place.
