Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

I agree with Catton:

all advertising should be banned.

You're right again, Rocc.

Anyone who hasn't read or doesn't comprehend Catton has no business spouting off on PO, or related issues. Such people do not have the tools to offer anything more than ideological BS or inadequately informed opinion (as analogous to me as a "faith healer" or an anatomy student attempting to perform major surgery).

Catton's book is a MUST READ.

As Monte has pointed out numerous times...

Catton has yet to be refuted on the merits of his analysis.

Great video. I like Catton's attitude. He's right. All we really have is the right now, so enjoy being alive on the planet right now.

Live one day at a time.

Here's an exerpt from the book, Last Lecture:

What do we want to do before we die?

Live.

I tell my kids that if I were not living I am not sure what else I would be doing.

I imaged Catton to be a bit like Kerkorian, the facilitator of euthanasia, but the guy is actually cheerful considering his message (sort of like 'live now, for we will [all] die later').

I really like that he got the motivation for his ideas on his "ecological basis treatise" from his camping trips near Seattle, Washington. Now that I am PO and DO aware, I appreciate the camping trips and being close to nature more than ever.

Excellent find, Rocc. Thanks much.

Anybody who understands what this guy is saying has to be a doomer. There's really no other alternative.

Honestly, advertising isn't that much of a problem. MARKETING though is.

Of course, the line if fluid.

Thanks Roccland, he's a likable man & expresses himself clearly (without all the flaming & moral browbeating like his fanboy Monte). I'd like to repost it but does anyone have any information (ideally contained in a webpage not his book) concerning where he got his data from on just what human carrying capacity is?

Without that his message is likely to simply run up against denial. Well it will anyway among 90%+ plus but without evidence to pack him up the remaining 10% will be less receptive.

I'm curious also as to his thoughts on potential energy sources not yet discovered. Mathus's math was off because he couldn't possibly have predicted coal & oil. Likewise it is possible (though I certainly won't say it's probable) that there are major energy sources Catton is not considering (perhaps because humans are not yet aware of them).

Also, while some ecological damage cannot be undone, it is certainly possible for land to be restored (usually on a small scale) when a concerted effort is made to heal it (like thru permaculture or biodynamics). The main problem in my mind is that, in this situation, people don't seem to have enough motavation to learn to swim (to use an analogy) and probably won't until the floods are all around them & it will be too late.

Nevertheless, most would agree that some will make it through the bottleneck. I'm reluctant to simply spread the message that "we're doomed, so we might as well play cards, shoot the sh!t, drink cheap importer beer & make love" & honestly, if Catton was a younger man today I think he'd be more focused on solutions himself.

A know "solutions" is a dirty word for many of you so substitute the word mitigation and/or personal survival if you like.

bump!

Any more info on Catton or sites explaining his basis for claiming we are definitively in overshoot? (not links to segments of his book in Google but a summery of his data).

Thanks for the bump.

This should be required viewing for everyone.

And Overshoot should be required reading.
