Like the illusion of Wall Street, with its vast and powerful investment banks, now shuttered, China too is an illusion perpetuated by the Globalists that gave us the 15,000 mile Caesar salad, poisoned cat food and lead based paint on babies' pacifiers. Like the illusion that money would come from thin air to always push housing prices higher, China has spent a generation pursuing its illusion. Pursuing an unattainable dream to be like the West, while 6000 years of its carefully shepherded top soil blows into the sea.

People in the warned area seem to be taking evacuation much more seriously this time around, having gained new respect for hurricanes after Katrina. If Gustav makes landfall without major damage, I wonder whether people will become complacent again for the next big one.
Yes Leanan, the storms to the east would be one of the outer bands of Gustav on my map. If you want to animate the map (to see the radar loop), you can do so here:

Either way, it makes a direct hit on the LOOP, and NO still has a high probability of going under.
If Gus takes out the Loop it will be taking out the ONLY supertanker port in the east. Cargo could be backed up waiting to unload for months.

Not in itself, but there is so much weakness in the economy this is the kind of thing that can tip it over the edge.
Most do not appreciate the precarious tight wire routine that the economy is performing. We have hundreds of banks on the brink of failure and a credit market that is near to exhaustion, if not down right collapse. The failure of one major insurance company, one large pension fund, one Wall Street investment bank and the entire system could fall into a bottomless pit.
Most will not begin to understand what is happening until their credit cards no longer work, their ATM cards no longer work and their paycheck or pension fund check bounce. Until then it will be no more real than another episode of American Idol. Maybe less?

The LOOP is the only VLCC/ULCC capable port in the US, period. If it's out of commission it'll have to be Suezmax million barrel tankers taking up the slack.

Just woke up and checked radar. No eye as yet, ragged appearance and rising pressure.
What part of the eye don’t you see! This monster looks well formed and chugging right along. It's also predicted to be a CAT 4 by landfall, with a little sister right on his tail!

It does seem to be weakening. Shear more of an issue than they thought it would be.

If it keeps on track, it looks like the eyewall is going right over Port Fourchon, the most important platform servicing port in the Gulf.
And this port is barely above water as it is. A 20 foot storm surge would devastate it, and its where the repair boats are usually sent from!
This is what Katrina did to the area, and that wasn't as direct a hit as this is projected to be...

A lot of meteorologists think Gustav will miss the biggest part of the pool of hot water. They're expecting it to intensify, but not as much as they thought before. And it will likely weaken before making landfall, because of that dry air.
Still a major hurricane, though, and things can always change. _________________ "The problems of today will not be solved by the same thinking that produced the problems in the first place." - Albert Einstein

Gustav is starting to reorganize after its brush with a mountainous Cuba. It's difficult for any large storm to make it into the Gulf relatively intact.
The question at this point is not whether there will be damage, it's how bad is the damage going to be?

how long before shortages begin to hit the east coast given it follows it's current projected track?
To move a gallon of gasoline up the pipe from NO to NYC takes about eight days. Add another three days for distribution centers to run dry and three days for retailers to run out. Two days later they will be sitting on their car hoods waiting for a service truck that isn’t going to show up!

nightmare scenario: east coast runs dry on gas just as another large hurricane comes ripping up the carolinas and into virginia. how's that for an ugly thought?

I wonder if we should start counting from Thursday. That's when Texas' "Fuel Plan" went into effect. They started flooding the area with as much fuel as possible. Demand jumped 80% in the region, and they still had to send emergency fuel trucks out along the evacuation routes. I presume some of the fuel was originally destined for the rest of the country. _________________ "The problems of today will not be solved by the same thinking that produced the problems in the first place." - Albert Einstein
