I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Apocalypse will hit Michigan first
article

"There are places closing down, people leaving the state, but the business of mental health is remaining steady." Confused

I vote for California.
61 days into the fiscal year and still no budget passed.
There is a law in California which suspends lawmaker's paychecks until they pass a budget.
I guess these clowns don't mind working for free which is fine with me because seriously why should they get paid if they're not producing something?
I also remember years ago reading some story about how the bathrooms at the state capital were running low on toilet paper because without a budget the vendors cannot get paid and therefore do not want to refill them.

The next time some idiot comes onto this board and arrogantly declares the solution to PO is a massively government subsidized "Manhattan energy project" I'm going to tell them --> "go move to California." Rolling Eyes

Good gosh, I can't wait for California to go down the tubes...it'll lighten the load for the rest of us here in the US of A. The Californicators have been lording it over the rest of us with their "superior" and cocksure attitudes for so long that I'd love nothing more than to see that state just shut down economically...and they'd better not be coming crying to the rest of us for help, either...hehe.

Never could figure out what's so great about that state anyhow... Wink

Michigan, on the other hand, I have sympathy for. At least real people live there instead of drug-crazed pop stars and that sorry excuse for a Governor...I'm willing to offer Michiganites a helping hand any time. Smile

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about who will be first just because this article happened to be written in Michigan.

Overall the situation is grim though. Solving problems with mind drugs is a crime IMO. What happens when the drugs are no longer available?

Are prescription drugs really Mental Health?? No, they are Mental Dependency~

Glad to see my state near the bottom of that list...certainly a far cry from nutty DC, with nearly 10x the spending...LOL.

I agree with treatment of large numbers of people with mental health drugs...this is a real good time to be steering people away from drugs, not towards them. I dread the thought of having to be on something "for life" in a post-peak world...it's just not a good situation to be in, IMO.

Of course, herbal remedies that can be grown and harvested locally is something totally different...this is one topic I'll be devoting some time to in the near future as I prepare for a life without doctors and 21st century-style medical care.

This really isn't anything new. Michigan has been circling the drain for a very long time thanks to the decline of the american auto industry.

And BTW, if California were a country it would have something like the 6th largest economy in the world. It is the largest state both in economics and population. If it goes down, the US will sink follow very quickly.

Please no, no, no. I don't want 30M people moving east. Oh no, I do anything to help CA, keep attracting those people, keep em happy and fat.

In-n-out burger, man. Sitting in your pick-up truck on the beach, eating In-n-Out burger and watching the sun-set and drinking beer. Ain't getting much better than that.

I have to agree. After having seen the ruins of Detroit first-hand, I would think the apocalypse has already come.

Good, bring it on - Maybe when that happens some of the millions of people who have moved here since I was born will leave again! If the Union ever wants to get rid of us it can just carve us right off. I bet we'll do just fine.

Oh... you can have Sacramento if you want it... Embarassed

Hey time for a little reality folks!
Many people aren't on mental health drugs just so they can look chipper for the meeting tomorrow. Many are on these drugs because they might be dead with out them.

Herbal remedies suck largely and that is why we don't use them. Science likes things that actually work.

Many herbal remedies do work for a host of ailments... and in fact my understanding is that the pharmaceutical industry is increasingly looking to natural products. But the above statement is absolutely true. Many people simply cannot function without medication. I expect and hope that pharmaceuticals will be protected as an industry and its products kept available for as long as possible.
