Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening. Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

New fleet may mean U.S. covets Brazil's oil: Lula

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warned on Thursday that the resurrection of a U.S. naval fleet in Latin America may signal that Washington covets huge new oil reserves off Brazil's coast.

"The (Brazilian) Navy plays an important role in protecting our subsalt reserves, because the men of Fourth Fleet are almost there on top of the subsalt areas," Lula said in a speech inaugurating a new oil platform in southern Brazil.

"Our Navy has to be the guardian of our offshore oil platforms to protect our patrimony, because before you know it some wise guy will come along and say: 'This is mine, it's at the bottom of the ocean anyway, so it's mine.'"

Just last week, Brazil deployed warships, fighter jets and thousands of troops off its southern coast, starting two weeks of military maneuvers aimed at showing the world it can defend its newfound oil wealth.

“I am worried about the US 4th Fleet, because it is going to go exactly where we have just found oil,” Lula told Argentinean journalists reporting on President Cristina Fernandez´visito to Brazil.

Lula said he does not understand why the US government is sending its 4th Fleet on a medical aid mission, when neither Brazil nor any Latin American government have asked for such help.

He pointed out that Brazil has no enemies, but “there could be somebody who wants war, and that is why we have to be prepared, to take charge of the security of our territory, and our region.”

I don't see no mention of any medical emergency problem in Latin America.

Well perhaps they know of something we don't and are repositioning the fleets accordingly, so when the medical emergency arises they will have assets on station.

They figured the aid by warship excuse worked so well in Georgia, they'ld try it again.

Too bad there wont be any friendly port nearby to fuel the ships in the South Atlantic... They would have to go fuel up in Angola or Nigeria. Unless of course the fleet is scheduled to stay in the Caribbean guarding the Venezuelan Oil.

Toss these words like a salad and you will come up with all of Cid's headlines.

Iran
Brazil
Israel
US
Pakistan
Russia
Venezuela
Fears
Threatens
Demands
War
Strike
Attack
Oil Supplies
Imminent
Disruption
Warships
Fighters
Bombs
Disrupts

Here is a sample of what comes out:

Iran Threatens Oil Supply Disruption
Venezuela Fears US Strike
Venezuela Fears US Attack Imminent
Iran Fears US Strike Imminent
Iran Fears Israeli Strike
Pakistan Threatens to Attack US
Russian Warships Threaten US
US Bombs Pakistan, Pakistan Threatens US

It's just nothing but countries alternating between faux cowering in fear or dick-wagging like Puss n Boots in Shrek 2.

It's all just so melodramatic, and yet just a big tease that leads nowhere. I'm waiting for the hairball moment.

Wow, what a surprise someone uses words like that in a forum about the political, military, and economic implications of a limited oil supply.

Somebody want to give Moss a rubber cigar for me? He must be very proud he's finally figured out what the board is all about.

35,

A couple of points of clarification. Angola and Nigeria produce very little fuel products. Second, US fleet structure does not have to rely on fueling from any foreign port...friendly or otherwise. The fleet can be continuously resupplied by its own tankers. Even if the supply train gets stretched thin that problem can be overcome by drafting any US flag vessel to support the feet. Yep...that's the law. They don't even need to ask anyone for permission.

On the other hand, no offshore oil field can be produced while under military threat. Thus I'm not sure where all the bolstering is coming from. I did read an interesting story last week (from a Chinese news link, of all places) about low level diplomatic talks between the US and Bz gov't regarding the possibility of the US helping to fund the development of Bz's offshore oil fields. It gave no details but, if true, one would think the US would at least get a right of first refusal on some of Bz's future oil sales. China has been making that same sort of deal with other countries for at least 10 years. I would think the Chinese would have approached Bz long before now. Perhaps these discussions have something to do with fleet movement.

What would be the purpose of this?

We have no problem in getting oil from Brazil...do we?

Or are we trying to send a message to Venezuela?

sh*t, I fear US intentions.

Puss n Boots was a great character. that question came up on a computer graphics forum this morning, how to communicate emotion just through the animation of a character's eyes.

Wouldn't it make more sense to sail the navy past VENEZUELA then? Perhaps it's a message for Brazil, like, I dunno... no more silly hats or something.
