Member Quotes
Oil's energy contribution has declined by about 12% since 1999. The world's economies have also declined by about 12%. (Using conventional metrics, which are time delayed determinations, this will only be seen in hind sight). The massive destruction of asset values now occurring testifies to it happening. Peak is well behind us, world economies have peaked and will continue to decline.

The Republicans revolted. Bush/Cheney have no clout left. The bailout plan has collapsed. And now, so has Washington Mutual. Can you imagine what could happen to the stock market tomorrow? Then the presidential debates are still on for tomorrow night.

Aren't you glad you're not a presidential candidate?

Obama seems to be a cool, considered head to his credit.

Bloomberg wrote:
More revealing, though, was to whom both candidates turned on that panic-ridden morning of Sept. 15, and how the messages evolved before and after that day.

McCain called Martin Feldstein, the well-known Republican economist and Reagan administration adviser, John Taylor of Stanford University, who served in President George W. Bush's Treasury and Carly Fiorina, once the chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Co.

Obama called former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, and former Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Larry Summers.

I wonder what Volker's take on this whole thing is?

But seriously: is it thumbs up or down tomorrow for the markets following the collapse of the talks?

The markets shot up on the expectation that the package would go through, it didn't. So yeah, I guess we can assume that people will try to get out of them as quickly as possible.

Regarding the talks:
Quote:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Negotiations in the U.S. Congress toward a massive bailout for Wall Street fell into disarray on Thursday night after a contentious White House meeting, with lawmakers later offering conflicting reports about the position of presidential candidate Sen. John McCain.

The White House meeting -- attended by McCain, Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama, President George W. Bush and lawmakers from both parties -- "devolved into a contentious shouting match," according to a statement from the McCain campaign.
...
"House Republicans, in some kind of arrangement with McCain, went off to wherever. I don't know whether they're ready to negotiate this. Their thing was some totally different mortgage insurance plan ... that would clearly delay this for a week or more," Frank told reporters.

I wonder what is really going on...

The markets collapse but the country itself will survive.

I wonder if the commercial paper markets are going to stall again tomorrow. I'm going to stock up on some food in the early morning...

On a more serious note for me as well, when the market crashed in 29 there was no such thing as ATMs, debit and credit cards. I was wondering if I should go get some cash out? If the credit market completely locks up, will my cards be any good? I have almost no cash on me right now.
