Global stocks and euro engulfed in spreading bank crisis
| Quote: | NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investors bought U.S. Treasuries and dumped stocks globally in a scramble for safety on Monday, amid a credit crisis that has U.S. lawmakers moving quickly to vote on a $700 billion financial rescue plan while central banks pumped more money into paralyzed money markets.
Gold prices surged in the search for safety while a handful of banks in Europe were partially nationalized over the weekend to protect them from failure.
To counteract the financial crisis that has spread worldwide from last year's U.S. mortgage market meltdown, the Federal Reserve announced a $330 billion expansion of arrangements to boost U.S. dollar liquidity throughout the global financial system which has become paralyzed by fear.
The euro fell nearly 2.0 percent against the U.S. dollar at one point, but has since gained back some ground. Emerging market currencies were pulled lower against the U.S. dollar in a flight to safety. |

Dow dropped a lot further than I thought it would.
Down 676 points after news that the "bailout" bill failed.
Now at 10,467 as of 3:30 EST.
Hoorah for the House Republicans for sticking to their guns
and listening to their constituents. _________________

Dow Closes Down Nearly 800 as Market Reels
| Quote: | The market screamed as the House vote on the Wall Street bailout bill teetered on the edge of a cliff — and then fell off.
"This is panic and ... fear run amok," Zachary Karabell, president of River Twice Research told CNBC. "Right now we are in a classic moment of a financial meltdown," he said.
...“I honestly don’t even know where we go from here,” said Dave Rovelli, managing director of equity trading at Canaccord Adams. “It’s impossible to quantify.”
“We were all in shock,” Rovelli said of the mood on the trading floor. “The problem is, out in the boondocks, people don’t realize what this means. When they can’t get a loan at the bank, then they’ll figure it out.”
"If there is no package, there will be a tremendous hole in credit markets. This must be passed," Gross said.
"We don't have a backup plan," Rovelli added. |

After the Dow closed at -777, the name of this thread sounds more ominous now. _________________ Stocking up on popcorn |

I was going to say that I thought things would go up and down until the big, big downer comes in a few weeks but...
the whole thing is and always has been completely irrational.
Fortunately the stock exchange is not the economy, unfortunately the rest of the economy pretty much sucks. _________________ “In the Soviet Union, capitalism triumphed over communism. In this country, capitalism triumphed over democracy.”

Heard something similiar from my son last night! However, I had a bit of selfish smuggness in telling my DH this evening how much the Dow, etc., dropped today-after I predicted it yesterday (he had said there wouldn't been much of a change at all) . That reminds me, I saw Jim Cramer on the news this weekend, and he was beside himself, just with all the delays being encountered in passing the ripoff rescue bill. I am thinking they must have him on some kind of intravenous form of tranquillizers by now - or a straight jacket. |
