Drove a friend to the airport tonight on what I considered to be an ill advised trip at this time, and just got back home.
The power is out here in the cabin, I am on emergency power now. Fired up a couple of crank up lanterns, using battery power on the laptop. Can recharge off my lead acid batteries if the power remains off for any length of time. Currently the dialup internet connection is working.
On the drive back, all streetlights were working, this is not a general power outage. We are experiencing high winds, I expect the cause of the outage here is a power line being taken down. However, this is an ominous sign to me tonight given all that has gone down today.
I bought gas for the pickup tonight, used the debit card, it worked. Gas also dropped here in price today to below $4/gal for the first time in more than 2 years. Another ominous sign, on signing on the net and opening Yahoo, there was a big ad for a Border Patrol Hiring Event ?!?!
With shipping grinding to a halt here, I am curious what people here think is going to happen in the commercial airline industry tomorrow? Besides this friend I drove to the airport tonight, I have several other friends out of state right now. Will they be able to get back home, or will there be a lockdown of commercial aviation as well?
Unlike Rocc, I am not going to sign off the net until the net goes down. Looking for specualattion from my fellow doomers still on board here.

For myself, relatively relaxed. For my out of town friends, worried. Any speculation from you on commercial airlines tommorow?

No. Chaos reigns. We're riding a roller coaster in the dark. No idea which way it's going to twist next. _________________ "It's still all about energy!"

I think as long as aeroplanes exist and fuel to power them exists then they will be flown. There may be delays and the like but I wouldn't worry about your friend not returning, depending on where they are going.
I am envious of a work collegue who goes on holiday tomorrow although I am more than a little concerned about the destination. The Canary Islands seem a little too close to the chaos of West Africa. |

Power just came back on, I am relaxing a bit All batteries now on recharge cycle. Freezers didn't even lose enough cold to get the compressors running again. Was concerned I would have to start packing ice. Fortunately we did have our first snowfall a couple of days ago and there is still some left on the ground.
Although I tend to agree that the commercial airlines should keep moving here a while, I remain concerned about exactly what plays out here over the weekend. I have been talking a while about my expectation of plastic freeze up and Martial Law, but now I REALLY think its imminent.
Will the announcement be made publicly or will it be insidious? How long will the MSM NOT report on the fundamentals? Can the charade be maintained another week?

I just can't think of a better time for a better time for a war to start and that worries me greatly.
I was fully expecting an event during Yom Kippur but that has come and gone.
I have a dull ache in my stomach for the last few days now but I'm morbidly facinated by all that is going on.
My mother was on the phone to me last night and I freaked her out by telling her I felt privileged to be living through the end of civilisation as we know it with 24 hour broadband coverage of the doom. Spending about 8hours a day online at the moment. Can't help myself. _________________ www.askaboutenergy.com |

RE, do you have a heart attack every time you hear a twig crack in your backyard because you think it might be a zombie? Get a grip. Part of prepping for collapse is not panicking. There is no sense doing physical preps if you don't have the mental discipline to keep it together when TSHTF. _________________ As long as I am around, there are no worries we have reached "Peak Words"

I'm not running to the bunker anytime soon, and even If I was it's not like I need to preemptively escape the cities before the hordes or anything. Even having emptied my current location in an attempt to sell I'm still far better prepared then the vast majority of people out there.
Really all that this current crisis has done is get in the way of me moving to a new location by slowing down everything involved in purchasing/selling a house and it's convinced me to increase my cash reserves rather then have so much sitting in the bank.
This is far from ww3 in my mind but things seem to be accelerating lately.

You get one or two little boats full of illegal immigrants from Africa turning up most days but they're no trouble. Usually half dead if they make it to the beach. They just get rounded up. Usually they're intercepted by the coast guard.

It's Fall in Texas. It's Texas vs. Oklahoma football weekend. The Texas State Fair is in full swing. I got my free flu-shot and my free picnic lunch on the patio for turning in my United Way gift. It dosnt feel like a doomer day here. But I know better. Hats off to you guys for getting me prepared. I can sleep at night knowing my family has a solid place to "bug out" if needed. Hang in there RE, its just getting cold up there. Life is still ticking. Peace. |
