I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

It is past the point where it no longer matters what GWB is going to lie about when he speaks. The biggest concern is what he is going to sign to grab more power. If and/or when martial law is put into place, that will certainly go a long way to prove all the most dire predictions recorded here.
(For some reason this post sounds garbled to me; I will just trust that the rest of you know what I am trying to say.Smile )

Please post links to streaming video sites for this? Cur, thanks, but the one you posted is from 10/3. I am at work and want to watch it, but usually don't bother with these things so I don't know where to look, and can't spend time looking. Thanks in advance!

I've been trying to watch the video or catch a transcript somewhere. In the absence of that I have seen a few summaries. Does anybody else think that Bush might be talking about either a bank holiday or a market holiday and that he knows that there is no way that he could just come out and mention that or it would really send the people into a panic?
I am not catching any signs that the government is trying to build effective independent credit facilities that could stand in place of what used to be there and to which the Fed could hand over the commercial paper and other short term loan responsibilities until those that used to handle the task can be salvaged. Independent facilities would have to be smaller and short term in nature, effectively holding the place of what used to be there until the panic runs its course. Yes, one more thing for those that are always worried about Fascism and/or communism taking over to immediately react to and declare a failed idea for one crazy reason or another.

No.

Must we expect every speech from Bush from here until the end of his term to be an announcement of bombing Iran, martial law, calling off the election, or some combination of the three? Get a grip.

The problem for the US is not that it doesn't have the tools. The problem is that the tools have been put in charge of the garage.
