I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.

Iraq - The Iraqi parliament picked Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani, who has spent a lifetime resisting Arab domination, as the country’s new interim president Wednesday, reaching out to the nation’s long-repressed Kurdish minority and bringing the country closer to its first democratically elected government in 50 years.

I cannot see peace in Iraq with a Kurdish president in power. It looks like civil war is in Iraq's future.

Friedman wrote in the Times back in January that Iraq needed a proper election so they could have a proper civil war. It will be interesting to see how things play out.
