Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

Hi People,
I've been into PO since way back (internet time!) to the early Paleolithic (1999), before it was a media hot flash. I started up the original Yahoo discussion group "RunningOnEmpty" (now renamed by the guy I turned it over to as "RunningOnEmpty2").
I'm just posting here to alert anybody who cares that I've got 3 other semi-relevant groups related to the whole energy/overshoot/dieoff meme:
Thanks for finally posting.I remember the first post "with an accelerated heart beat". It's all about the response, isn't it and this is a forum where fist fighting is the rule.
Anyway, in the first link that you place about the IMF warning about permanent higher oil prices it states:
The IMF forecast in its World Economic Outlook that crude would cost $34 a barrel in 2010 in today's money and would rise to $39-$56 a barrel in 2030. The predicted prices are well above market and oil industry expectations. They are also much higher than the latest long-term forecast from the International Energy Agency, the oil watchdog, of real oil prices of $27 a barrel in 2010 and $34 a barrel in 2030.
Now what how naive can one be and what is the point to even post such a kind of information????
I believe you are mistaken. I have no intention of fighting anybody.
>Now what how naive can one be and what is the point to even post such a >kind of information????
I'm far from naive and was into PO probably long before you and most here.
The post you refer to is one of thousands placed by one of the 525 list members in my group as background information on what significant others, in this case the IMF, are saying/thinking. Posting the article does not imply endorsement or validation of the contents. Is that a difficult or novel concept?
But do be warned: AlasBabylon is a wild and freaky group, focused on the cultural and psychological aspects of dieoff. It is not moderated and it is not for everyone. People who can't take a rough, weird, crazy and sometimes stupid ride probably won't feel comfortable there. If you love control and "respectability", don't bother to join AlasBabylon.

I didn't want to say that "you" are naive, but whoever wrote that particular text plus I have no doubt that you are aware of the problem longer than I.

Well, same here, I did not hint that "you" were out to fight anyone but noticed simply that some posters statements were ripped apart and in pieces within the shortest time. Eventhough your direction is fully alligned, and that scenario not truly applicable.
I refer rather to people like that neo-con that posted recently, some of you might remember. I actually have to say to his defense that he had some valid points and he defended them solid.

Scott,
An ol' timer...glad to hear from another ol' one. I was there with u. It may have actually been in 1998 for me? I used to converse with Jay Hansen back in those days. I've been out of this loop for a number of years. Just got back in with a different computer name/address/etc.
I have purchased a number of books, read info on ROE even though I was never much of a participant. I've been working on preparation for the "Die Off". Got land, water, power, etc. Still have a long ways to go but...

Hey Sea Otter, are you still around and available for discussion?
This forum is meant to stand all weather and time... and no, I am not a fundamental American Christian but a pragmatic craftsman.

Hey Scott, I used to read ROE2 and Alas Babylon daily in the old days. I'm sorry I missed your post (of two years ago). From monitoring several "peak" sites over the years I came to the conclusion that they can become a bit insular with not much cross pollination. However, recently I think people are beginning to realize that we are family in a village of the awake. It may be as close as we will ever get to community during and after the collapse.
Interesting dynamic forming. I need to go over there and see what is going on these days. I know that Sharon Astyc has stepped forward and become a great leader from ROE2.
