I think this is the beginnings of an economy based on perpetual growth and fossil fuel energy running headlong into geological energy constraints. Basically I see an undulatory downward path for the rest of my life. From here out, I think any rallies in our economic condition are going to be met with spiking commodity prices that knock us right back down.
I was wondering about sunscreen aswell. I haven't seen anything "natural" other than widebrimmed hat and long sleeves. _________________ We've tried nothin' and we're all out of ideas.

In response to the first post: a strong minority if not majority of the questions you were looking into are answered in a general but useful way by a book I just picked up at Costco for $12.50 entitled "Country Wisdom & Know-How: Everything You Need to Know to Live Off the Land." The book goes into planting and maintaining edible plants, composting, practical recipies, raising and butchering a variety of animals, beekeeping, carpentry and construction, etc. The content comes from small booklets called "Country Wisdom Bulletins" published by Storey Publishing back in the 1970's which have been compiled into an oversized, 480-page volume. The internet and specialized books have better information on just about everything it covers, but it's nice to have a general book like this if you don't have access to anything else. Having been to Costcos all over I know they don't all carry the same merchandise (I found mine in Western Washington), but it's worth a look for the price.
www.safetycentral.com - all kinds of good stuff: portable toilet (used for composting toilet system ala The Humanure Handbook), BioSheild Tear Gas & Pepper Spray Neutralizer, Tiger Claw self defence tool (vs using your car keys), food storage containers, Solar batteries and chargers, Katadyn Ceradyn drip water filters, Decoy Safes (looks like a can of foam shaving cream, has a secret compartment), Potassium Iodine radiation protection tablets, etc!
Garden furniture plus functionality - Gazebos, trellises, arches
I'm also researching grain bags, burlap bags, flour sacks, raw milk, how to make salami & hanging hams, how to build a solar dehydrator, joining a CSA, growing a Three Sisters Garden, a soda bottle irrigation system.
What fruit and nut trees I can start on my patio that won't die in the Phoenix heat .... it's already in the 90's, ugh!!!
