As an Indian, I would hate for my country to be part of any block containing Russia and China vis-a-vis the US. Ideological affinities aside, I refer to our strong democratic ideals; it would also be tantamount to suicide, as India imports most of its oil from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The US being the dominant naval power in the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf could easily cut of these supplies.
Besides, at the moment India enjoys good relations with the US and Israel; India is the second largest, I think purchases of Israeli arms; infact there is talk of a 3-way alliance between the three countries. I think the most likely route for India in case of a confrontation between the great powers would be one of cautious nuetrality.

I think India has clearly demonstrated a much stronger committment to democracy that the US has. There is good reason to believe India could provide a good counter-weight to the authoritarian powers of Russia and China. The three countries are pretty much equally balanced in power.
Partnering with the US would be much less rewarding for India. The US has demonstrated it can't be trusted and would likely cut India loose whenever the opportunity presented a benefit to the US. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said on Wednesday his country wanted India to have a permanent seat in an expanded United Nations Security Council.
