|
|
Let us suppose there will be a dieoff. For the sake of discussion, the dieoff will reduce global population to 1.5 billion people, and stabilize at that number. Population reduction will occur through famine and disease, and will not involve wars or weapons of mass destruction. The period of population reduction will proceed over 40 years.
The goal is to choose who dies. For one glittering instant, the universe permits you - you personally, as you sit reading this message - to choose a general algorithm for who dies. It can be anything you specify.
How's that for power?
Yes, I recognize not everyone agrees with the assumptions; please feel free to argue for your preferred set of initial conditions. However, for the purpose of selecting who gets to participate in the dieoff, please use my stated conditions so we have an equivalent starting point.
Keep in mind that the closer the dying are to you, in location or characteristics, the better the chance that you get to become one of them.
So - if you choose random, you have about an 80% chance of being part of the dieoff. Therefore, choose wisely.
By the way...keep in mind that policy makers around the world will wind up making this very decision at some point. Treat it as a joke if you wish - but someone, somewhere, is making decisions and preparing plans for such things. Given the speed of developments, some serious thought might be in order.
Welcome to the post-peak world....

Freudian Slip ?
I said other. It should be genetically determined by nature. Or is that random ? If I could specify, it would be all the people with the party-pooper gene. And, people genetically predisposed to whine and complain. |

You're dead Ludi.
I chose the poor as this will allow most of the death to occur in areas remote to my locale and thereby insulate my family some.
This will also allow me to admonish my grandchildren at the dinner table to
"Eat all your portion. There are children starving to death in (fill in the latest poor nation/continent)." _________________ "Modern Agriculture is the use of land to convert petroleum into food."

Crap, Jack, I spent 10 minutes composing this kneejerk reactionary post in the witchdoctor thread: hold still, would ya?!
| Quote: | Don't know nothing about algorithms, nor do I have a preference about who will die except it not be one of mine.
But as far as probabilities, it seems to me the chances for survival of someone in an urban area staring into a nightscope waiting for any sign of the dieoff to fulfill their prophesies aren't much higher than someone digging grubs from under a log.
Of course the grubber wants to survive, so my point is moot I suppose. |

Your neighbors aren't going to be happy, Ludi. Was That what you mean when you say you are going to help them?
I picked Other because you would only allow one choice.
First wave would consist of people I didn't know. And none of the "Six Degrees" business. _________________ "RRrrruuuunnnn!!!" ~Apocalypto |

| I chose religious parameters... Since religious fundamentalists of all stripes are among the most ignorant individuals, tend to overbreed, and exacerbate most of the problems the world faces I'd rather they die than anyone else. |

I would select the people who are not technologically inclined, people who are reactionary, and luddites, and people who believe in flash over substance(politicians, salesmen, lawyers, ect...). This would also include superficial bimbos such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian(I LOATHE THEM).
Also, people who are warmongers, you know the kind of dickhead you says "lets invade their country to get OUR oil!". Also the kind of luddite who says "No Nuclear" and doesn't like it because they don't understand it and it hurts their head.
People who have no ethics and are willing to kill anyone or sell anyone out to get ahead(although greed and ambition are good, so long as people get money by creating resources or wealth).
Most of the people in the world with IQs lower than 95.
All the manwhores in the world, who go around hurting women and spreading disease. All the nymphomanic skanks, who manipulate men in order to get them to pay all their bills, while cheating on them in order to get pregnant to a man they really want to be with(but the man doesn't have the cash or the will to take care of her).
All the people who are dying of a sexually transmitted disease that they themselves inflicted upon themselves via irresponsible behavior(but not AIDs orphans). |

I recall a sci-fi story about a mysterious stranger who offered a person $ 1,000,000 if they would push a red button. However, pressing the button would result in the demise of someone they did not know.
The person pressed the button, their spouse died, and the insurance proceeds were $1,000,000. The mysterious stranger pointed out that no one ever really knows anyone else.

Often, say when I'm driving in traffic, or I get a telemarketing call I say; 'god I wish everyone other than my favorite 100 people would die!'
So that would be my choice... Nothing personal ;) _________________ “You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on.” George W. Bush |

Now that gets me to thinking -- can I really think of 100 favorite people?
I can think of a lot of people I love -- mostly family. So I guess they'd make the cut. But some members of my family I don't really like -- so maybe I am SUPPOSED to let them make the cut ... but ....
And I can't think of one dentist (I am phobic about going to the dentist) that I would count among my 100 favorite people. But I sure wouldn't want to leave them entirely off the list. Need at least two, I'd say.
Anyway, I guess I could come up with 100, and in fact I am going to do focus on that as I fall asleep tonight ... and see who they turn out to be.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure some of my family members won't make the cut.
