This thread is for your ideas on how to defend one's homestead without resort to firearms or other lethal means.
Please don't use the thread to try to convince me to buy firearms, thanks!
My current defensive strategies are "Not Being Noticed, " and "Looking Poor."
My poultry and sheep make the "not being noticed" part not very effective, because they make a racket. But our place certainly looks downright poverty-stricken compared to the neighbors'. Guess we're the "white trash!" |

I think the following signs could come in handy...
A few dead bodies with horrible burns and blisters might come in handy as well.
Plant a faux garden and poison the food with elements that will not harm the plants but will harm people.
Dig a moat and fill it with those little penis dwelling parasites and parahna but then you would need one of these.

As we plan our gardens, planting with an eye torwards loss, I wonder if the same could be applied to supply. Substitute "slugs" for "thieves" and have more on hand.
Some people who visit PO.com have stockpiled alcohol and tobacco for future trade/bribe. Making wine and brewing beer would be less expensive than stockpiling cases of Gentleman Jack.
Good communication skills, calm demeanor and keeping one's head in the face of anger, force or belligerence is another defense strategy.
We refuse to own guns period. Like you, we keep a low profile and of the four houses on our block, ours looks the shabbiest and I'm damn proud of it!
Oh, and have an exit plan.

Great topic, Ludi.
I already mentioned my Maremma sheepdog - I know dogs can be poisoned or shot, but they are still a decent deterrent, and can protect your livestock from predators as well. _________________ "Every junkie's like a setting sun..." - Neil Young |

A blackberry hedge, or similar plants with nasty thorns (we have barberries along the side of the garden facing the road - they look good at this time of year with red berries and the leaves changing red), will help limit access to the garden, reducing access points. _________________ We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice. |

Hawthorn is a good one, you can graft apples or pears onto it too. Sometimes worry about being sued by someone ripping their clothes when they walk past but definitely not a hedge to climb through.
grease or tar on top of your gate/gate posts is a good deterent too, not just for the mess it makes but its so hard to get off, the rest of the community will know what they'd been up to.
Ever thought of keeping bees, near an access point to the garden. I bet you could attach something simple to remotely make the bees angry. |

I like the infectious disease signs scatter a few dead birds around it.
There is also pepper spray or "bear guard"...or a super soaker filled with rubbing alcohol (don't need to light it...when soaked with alcohol, people will usually run away...if not...light 'em up). _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos custodes. |

All excellent suggestions.
We've considered putting up "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"-style bone windchimes.
We have a dog but she loves people, totally useless as a guard dog. My ram Harold sometimes attacks, but he's just as likely to attack me as a stranger.... The sheep are fairly scary looking, but they might look like dinner to some people.... |

I understand Ludi...My dog (when she was still alive) would likely kiss a person to death rather than bite and the ONLY time she'd bark was when a person walked by the yard & DIDN'T stop to pet her.
The nieghbors used to litteraly stand in line to pet my dog. _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos custodes. |

There are others that may or may not be lethal....like a baseball bat...or my favorite throwing weapon ever devised.

For a ranged non-leathal weapon, I would go with something like this:
I have seen them used. They work quite well up to 20 yards. All you need is a 12 gauge shotgun to launch them. If you change your mind, you can always keep some lethal shotgun rounds too! _________________ "Peak oil isn't more than an interesting industry factoid and doesn't have anything to do with the hysterics speculated on ad nauseum around here!" Wow! I've got a maremma as well. I initially got her to look after animals (that are coming next year), but I wouldn't like to be a zombie with Snowball around.
I'm thinking of going back to Italy and getting her a mate as well. They require less food than other livestock guard dogs and are far more mobile.
This is her at three months, harrassing my sister-in-law's male Anatolian Shepherd
