Chaos in the Bush Administration
Quote:
The lead in a UPI story January 29, 2005 read, “ Insurgents are bombing pipelines and other parts of Iraq's oil infrastructure almost daily, another sign that the country's security situation is deteriorating beyond control of the U.S.” It is now a year later and the story has not changed. The situation in Iraq is getting worse.
In 2003 the World Bank said it would take 56 billion to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure. The 18.5 billion allocated by the United States for rebuilding Iraq is almost gone and there won't be anymore forthcoming. Only 1 billion of the 13.5 billion offered by other countries has been dispersed. Perhaps these countries already see the writing on the wall and are unwilling to invest anymore money. Many contractors have said without American troop protection it is unsafe to work in Iraq. Many are also leaving because they don't believe the new Iraqi government can guarantee them the lucrative contracts they received from the United States. Like rats from a sinking ship the contractors are the first to go.
Can't wait to read President Bush's State of the Union Address to be delivered on 31st Jan. Will his administration continue to support the war in Iraq? What do you think? Are there other issues of importance to you?

I am sure some "moral issue" will become the focus of the nation by Jan 31st. There must be another feeding tube somewhere that can draw the undivided attention of the populous.

He will:
* Mention September 11th, 2001 at least three times
* Say 'terrorist', 'terrorists' or 'terrorism' at least 30 times
* Talk elaborately about the 'historical' Iraq elections: a landmark day in the history of liberty, democracy and freedom
* Talk elaborately about his 'Strategy to achieve Victory in Iraq' which will require yet more sacrifice and patience from our military, their families, and the Iraqi people
* Talk about the 'progress' (?) that has been made in Iraq, about how the 'terrorists' are loosing the 'battle for freedom and democracy'
* Talk about Irans nuclear program, which poses a 'grave threat' to our world
When you critically analyze the speeches Bush has given in the last two years, you'll notice that they are pretty much all of the same..... _________________ "In the U.S., fears are so exaggerated and out of control that anxiety is the number-one mental health problem in the country.", Barry Glassner

It's a strange world we live in indeed. With the Bush administration up is down , and down is up. If they get caught doing something wrong, they attack and say they didn't do it. When someone proves they did it, they attack and say it was right not wrong, regardless of law, evidence, or any other inconvenient facts. 29% of our population believes them regardless of what they do. They could decapitaite a baby in the middle of the state of the union address on national television, and the radical right would say they didn't do it. That's the kind of bizarre, Alice in Wonderland world we have right now.
The radical right suports them unquestioningly, the press is asleep at the switch, and the democrats... do they still exist? The Democrats for the most part are worthless stuffed suits who couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. I changed my party affiliation (to the Greens) because I couldn't stand thinking of myself as a democrat any more.
So to expect Bush to see anything but roses during the state of the union is probably misguided. And the radical right will praise him for being such a great failure.

What creeps me out most of all is this "unitary executive" stuff. And unless there's a filibuster, we're going to get a Supreme Court justice who believes in it.

Why would any aware POer even bother listening to Bush's prerecorded propaganda message on January 31? When Bush comes on the telly in my house, the "mute" (or "off") button is instantly hit. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."

Do bears poop in the woods? Of course they'll continue to spew their garbage about how we're liberating the people of Iraq. Right. Your second question, are there other issues of importance to you? How much time do you have. In my dream world, I would like to see Bush talk about doing the following over the next year: restoring civil rights, stopping torture and spying on Americans, stopping the war on the environment, new massive investments in renewable sources of energy, stopping the huge tax breaks/giveaways to the wealthy and corporate america, affirming the right of gay americans to marry, I could go on and on...

I've concluded that there isn't anything Bush has to say that I need to hear. Everything he says is 100% predictable. His positions, all of them bad ones, are set in concrete. Therefore nothing that comes out from between those thin, cold lips is newsworthy. The only development of mild interest to me will be the day he's sent to pasture. Of course, on that day he'll just be replaced by another piece of crap.

Not surprisingly, as they seem to be generated for an audience less interested in actual detail than in comforting rhetorical dross.
My favourite stock phrase, has always been 'The Merkin* People'.
Love that one!
(* actually, it pretty well sums up how the Bush administration regards - and uses - its electorate).

I think GG nailed it. Don't forget that the fourth estate is just a complicit in this mess. Everyone takes for granted that people only have a 30 second attention span, but hopefully that will start to change when things really get difficult. The question is, will it be soon enough to do anything about it? _________________ "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. US President Bush planning alternative energy initiative
Quote:
US President George W. Bush is planning to make alternative energy a cornerstone of his annual State of the Union address next week, he said in an interview broadcast late Friday.
He will talk about the issue 'big time' during his speech on Tuesday to a joint session of Congress, Bush told CBS News in an exclusive White House interview.
'We have got a serious problem, and now is the time to fix it,' he said.

I remember not caring that Bush was elected President back in 2000 because he talked about energy initiatives (as well as all the same other stuff than Gore) on the run up to the presidency. He seemed to be an okay-dopey guy who listens to smart people - but with a business-bent. And his father was president to boot - so maybe Dad passed down some tips...

Think these things will happen?

spe_cop, do you have any idea of what a spectacularly ugly comment that was? What is the purpose? Simply to draw attention to yourself? Just curious. _________________ "Actually, humans died out long ago."
