I happened to catch a few minutes of a fairly high quality chinese movie with english subtext.
The story line included much treachery with double and triple tangled webs of alliance.
I was left with the sense that successful treachery was celebrated more so than in western movies. There was no moral outrage expressed against the "benedict arnolds" of the day.
It may be my own interpretation as I have always felt, in my dealings with asians, that the "tricksy hobbit" approach was in play.

Keep in mind of course that they are equally busy screwing each other over. This leaves them less able to screw us. My experience is no where near as broad as yours, but does include business dealings sprinkled over 25 years. The movie example only points to what I have already observed.

At this stage I can't see how the US economically breaking would help China. China depends on US dollars as much as the US depends on cheap Chinese goods.
I can't speak for the Chinese government’s intentions (nor could anyone but the Chinese government) but I can say that in a couple years of being here I have not met a single Chinese person that would consider the US an "enemy". I’m sure there must be some out there, but I have personally not seen anything even close. For the most part every Chinese person I have spoke to about the US, holds us in high regard, and respect. I can understand that there are those in the US who see China as taking jobs, and I can understand their resentment. In my opinion there is no secret desire by Chinese people to do harm to the US economically and for the most part they are just average people just like those in the US. They want to work hard and provide for their families.
I see China now taking steps toward trying to become equals with the US, and I can't blame them for wanting that. The Chinese government is making deals and diplomatic relations with lots of countries to try and benefit China, and they are succeeding.
I think THIS is what the US should take note of. We are making too many enemies and not enough friends in my opinion. I want to see the US keep its super power status. Labeling China as the enemy at this point is not going to help us do that. I think the world is destined to have at least one other super power, (maybe more) and it could very well be the US and China having that status in the future.
I'm sure that there will be those that would think I'm a traitor for saying some of these things, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I'm an American, and I am extremely proud of my country, and I take every opportunity to let that be known to the Chinese that I speak to about world affairs. Before I came here I had about the same opinion of China as I think most Americans have. Distrust, apprehension, uncertainty...ect. After spending allot of time here my opinion slowly began to change.
I know that there are those feelings about China, and I understand where they are rooted, I would only suggest that people not judge the "people" of China based on actions, or past actions of their government. Lord knows, I know that there are many in the US who don’t wish to be judged by our leaders all the time. Personally, I think there is a definite possibility of a very valuable alliance between the 2 countries that can benefit both, and I think an alliance has allot more pro's then say...... a war. I also know that with peak oil being an issue, this could squash that idea, but in the long run peak oil will affect everyone no matter who you are allied with. _________________ Have an e-business or storefront?
