So says Ted Turner, the restaurateur, environmentalist and former media mogul whose controversial comments have earned him the nickname "Mouth of the South." |

| It is already happening in Africa so don't be so surprised when it comes to your neighborhood. Now he's claiming to be an environmentalist?? What did he do, go plant a tree? |

If Ted Turner says we're going to turn into cannabals, then I'm selling all of my prep stuff and getting a Hummer, because, AFAIK, the only times he's been right about anything substantive had to do with CNN and TCM.
Then again, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then, so maybe I'll just get a Vue. _________________ When somebody makes a statement you don't understand, don't tell him he's crazy. Ask him what he means. -- Otto Harkaman, Space Viking |

i like the way he thinks
the rare cannibalism thread i just had to pop in
in any case it wont be global warming that has us eating each other if anything it will be the energy depletion
once the developed countries start running out of energy for heating a warmer climate will be very welcome _________________ Tyler_JC:

Well, you see hes kind of like Al Gore. He filthy rich, has numerous mansions, and jets around the world bitching about how much energy us ignorant plebeians are using. Mostly he buys up land to "protect" it from us. Basically so he and his cronies can use it as their private playground.
Hes also an arrogant prick.
Hmmmm.... With their soft coddled life they might taste good however... Kind of like veal...

As revolting as this may sound, a lot of PO members are probably thinking about this as an investment opportunity. Many people here think the oil companies are evil and conventional agriculture is the bane of the planet, but that doesn't stop them from investing in these commodities. _________________ "It is no measure of health to be deemed sane in an insane society" J. This is more true than you know. In New Mexico he bought 2 HUGE ranches that have some of the best elk and mule deer hunting in the world because it is completly private and no access to public hunting.
He claimed he is using them for ranching (bison) but most of the ranch terrain is not suitable for bison.
I don't blame him though. If I had millions to spend....I would buy up some big ranches also.

| His comments are interesting, bc they show that not all wealthy people are convinced their money guarantees their safety. If someone's hungry enough to eat you, what good is paper? Or, for most people, plastic or digital dollars? |

Hahaha.
Look at Anarky321's signature.
I've said it before and I"ll say it again:
"Every conversation on this website, given enough time, will turn into a discussion of cannibalism."
However, in some places, cannibalism might become a reality.
If sub-Saharan Africa continues to dry up and crop yields collapse. Massive influxes of foreign aid will be necessary to counter starvation.
Africa needs to figure out a way to bring crop yields up without using up all of the available water resources.
I mean, just look at this chart. How are they going to feed everyone if yields all across Africa drop even further?
Obviously US grain yields aren't perfectly distributed but it gives you an indication of the poor yields that keep Africa poor. _________________ "www.peakoil.com is the Myspace of the Apocalypse."

maybe he's sick of seeing every square mile made into a farm field or a suburban development or a highway or a city...
imo as long as he leaves the land uninhabited and undeveloped he can buy all the land he wants _________________ Tyler_JC:

africa is, in a word, f*cked
nothing will save it now except a severe dieoff; only when the population:resources balance is restored can they lead normal lives again
as for massive loads of financial aid, well my prediction is that as the developed countries slip into a global depression that financial aid will be mostly cut off
cannibalism is indeed present in africa, and it will indeed become prevalent throughout the continent
if it wasnt for the hot climate and malaria and the fact that id stand out like crazy id move there myself, because it is going to be one hell of a fun time there pretty soon
edit: somali pirates just seized a french luxury yacht with 30 crew....see what i mean? _________________ Tyler_JC:

Yes, conserving natural resources is a good thing...but lest one forget, people don't become billionaires by watching butterflies flutter about. Certainly, Ted Turner has had a mighty hand in contributing to this mess. _________________ "It is no measure of health to be deemed sane in an insane society" J. Krishnamurti

yeah but if it wasn't him it'd be someone else. probably someone who didn't buy up land to let it be.
i think it's fine. we aren't hurting for hunting territory. |
