WASHINGTON - Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats harassed three U.S. Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz Sunday, in what the U.S. military considers a "significant provocative act."
Iranian boats warned the warships with a radio message saying, "You are going to blow up within minutes."
The Navy warships were forced to take defensive modes, but no shots were fired by either side.
some guts....

1. what kind of response were the iranians trying to get?
2. if they did not get the response they were looking for what will they try next time? _________________ "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain."

Maybe the US ships where headed for mines and the Iranians were trying to warn them
honestly...I don't know, for all we know they were trying to get oil back above $100. Which I might add, is dropping in price as we speak. _________________ "The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time."

Quote:
FIVE Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three US Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route off the Iranian coast, over the weekend, CNN reported.
Citing unidentified US officials, CNN said the Iranian vessels came within 200m of the US ships in international waters in the strait on Saturday, and US sailors came close to opening fire.
US military officials told CNN the boats were “attack craft” that they believed were operated by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard.
The Iranian boats made threatening manoeuvres against the US warships and threatening radio transmissions, the officials told CNN.
The captain of one US vessel was in the process of giving the order to shoot when the Iranian ships began turning away, CNN said.
A radio transmission from one of the Iranian ships said, “I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes,” CNN reported, citing a US official.
After the threatening radio communication, US sailors manned their ships' guns and were very close to opening fire, it said.

There was no immediate US comment.
This was probably more like it. Iranian vessels justifiably patrolling their coastline and a pack of US war ships approach. _________________ Everything is Impermanent. Shakyamuni Buddha

A couple of things on this:
a. This is the kind of thing that happens all the time out there, and most of the time it does not make the news.
b. It is the day before the New Hampshire primary. Between now and November, there will be a "news story" released by whoever does this sort of thing, right before every big Democratic or other political event. In 2004, the equivalent of this was to upgrade the "terror alert system" to "a slightly brighter shade of orange" or to have a terrorist bust right before a big democratic speech or debate of some kind. It plays into the "all fear all the time" strategy of the current so-called government. It is not a coincidence that the Osama tapes seem to surface right before some political event in the US.
c. I believe there was a thread on this some time back. It could be a strategy to swarm and attack a US vessel with the equivalent of suicide jetskis, continuing the asymmetrical warfare strategy. This might be Iran just testing the US response capability. The USAF does this over Iran all the time, testing how the radar works,. so that when the time comes, theyknow the vulnerability of the system.

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday as a U.S. Navy cruiser, destroyer and frigate were on their way into the Persian Gulf and passing through the strait - a major oil shipping route.
Five small boats began charging the U.S. ships, dropping boxes in the water in front of the ships and forcing the U.S. ships to take evasive maneuvers, the Pentagon official said.

I have previously expressed the opinion that if what is going on in the Middle East does not scare the crap out of you, you are not paying close enough attention.

Could this have been a mock mine drop exercise to illustrate to the US just how fast they can be deployed? _________________ Machines are what distinguish modern man from the savage.

American armada prepares to take on Iran
As flagship of the Fifth Fleet, the Eisenhower welcomed the arrival of a second Nimitz class nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS John C. Stennis, and its accompanying destroyers on Tuesday.
Captain Dan Cloyd, the Eisenhower's commanding officer, compared the situation with the international tension of the Cold War.
"There was a time when we had two aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean," he told The Daily Telegraph. "The world changes and we adapt."
