Anybody remember this magazine? I assume it's not still being published.
When I was a kid I loved reading this magazine. It was like Boys Life to me.
In retrospect it was kind of hokey, but man, at the time I thought it was so cool. _________________

It folded around 2001 I think. Much of the readership migrated to Backwoods Home Magazine. I agree ASG was great. _________________ "So while you sit and whistle Dixie with your money and your power.

To me, Backwoods Home is actually a MUCH better magazine. The essays especially are fabulous. _________________

The magazine is still around in online format as Modern Survival. Jim Benson is still the editor:

It's a shadow of its former glory. Back in the late 90's they had some really good articles from Ayoob, Jackie Clay, Scott Stoddard and Christopher Nygeres. I still have about 20 issues tucked away and from time to time they are good references.
On the flip side, Len McDougal's style of crisp narration on trips to the state park drove me nuts. Did he get on anyone elses nerves? _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket |

I'm just still pissed that I didn't win the SPAS 12 guage they gave away back in 1984.
Ayoob wrote for ASG? That's interesting. _________________

I'd say it died a pitiful prolonged death when it re-tooled as The Journal for Self Reliance. It was a sad day when I went out to my mail box and saw "How to make the perfect smoothie" on the cover. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket |

Holy Smokes! I remember that givaway! One of my bunkmates at camp had that issue. The summer of 84' kicked off my discovery of the doom culture. _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket |

Massad Ayoob. Not Ayoob the PO.com poster. _________________ "So while you sit and whistle Dixie with your money and your power.

I also DIDN'T win the over/under .22/.410 survival firearm and a year's supply of freeze dried food the following year (might have been the year before). _________________

I recall a 1985 issue on the .410 Snake charmer. It had a guy with a boonie hat and the barrel pointed at the camera. At age 15 I wanted to be that guy when I grew up.
I think 1985 was the same year I discovered Paladin Press which of course always advertised in ASG. Today I'm astonished they sent a 15 year old a catalog back then. Oh boy the titles, Knife fighting secrets from Rex Applegate, Lockpicking, Guerilla warfare and "Secret Love making techiques of the Ninja"
BTW-wasn't it Survive! magazine back then? _________________ In other words, it's a huge sh*t sandwich, and we're all gonna have to take a bite.-from Full Metal Jacket |

The Chinese generators on the back of every issue.
Ah, the memories.
Paladin Press was awesome. Classics like:
"Travel Trailer Homesteading Under $5,000"
"How to Survive Without a Salary"
and the ever-useful
"So You're Going to Prison" _________________

Good Gosh, I recall they even had one on canibalism.
Back to ASG, does anyone know if Scott Stoddard still writes for the newer version? He always had good articles on gear. I like Backwoods and don't get me wrong, it's a heck of a magazine, but to me ASG was so good pre Y2K. I think the Y2K bust really hurt the magazine because it changed formats shortly afterwards. I think I remember the owner dying and the widow started putting pressure on Cheif Editor Jim Benson to change directions.
Hey remember the personal ads?
