The GEM cars look OK. I just priced one out on their website and it looks like a $16,000 car for me. Even the little two-seater is $15K once you trick it out with crap like doors and a dome light.
Are there any better electric cars out there right now? |

| Personally, if I was considering spending $12 to $16K on an electric vehicle, I would go with a used professionally converted Metro or maybe a Ranger or S10 pickup conversion, rather than a NEV type of vehicle. Our electric is a 1975 vintage Citi-car that needs lots of work, but we are hoping to have it functional this summer. The old Citicars and Comutacars would be considered NEVs today, but back then they were titled as "real" cars. I see a surprising number of late model professional electric car conversions on eBay and also on electric car sites. |

I have been eyeing electrics, but they aren't quite ready for primetime. We just bought a Honda Civic GX (Natural Gas). We pay 63 cents a gallon for fuel and it gets about 30 mpg commuting (city/hwy combined). I'm sure NG will follow gasoline eventually, but even after natural gas goes up 5 times I will be paying less than the current price of Gas. Of course when NG goes up that much we will be freezing our butts off in the house... |
