Don’t worry, just a little bump - $70 is just around the corner. Short traders just keep making those margin calls, mortgage the house if you have to. Fortunes await you! PO is for pansies and doomers. At $70 short some more ..... it is going back to $22 .... the world is awash with oil ........ reality has nothing to do with it, its all in those charts!!!!!!!!!!

I did a quick search of the forums to see if this had been discussed before, and I didn't find anything, so forgive me if it has. I was doing some data gathering at work today and tripped across the Ohio State Geology website. They were advertising a new class that began this fall called Sustainability and Peak Oil (Geol Sci 694). I was a little shocked. Lectures and seminars are one thing, but a whole class is something that I hadn't considered. Are there others like this around the country/world?

We have had a class called "Energy, Climate and the Modern Society" here in Uppsala for quite a few years. It was in that class I first came into contact with Peak Oil, in the autumn of 2004.
Since then, the peak oil issue has grown extremely much. From getting zero media space and being looked upon as conspiracy theorists, today we get full pages in major papers and recognition from governments and major energy agencies. _________________ Peak oil is not an energy crisis. It is a liquid fuel crisis.

Book List:
Readings will be selected from journals, books and other sources on reserve in Orton Library or available
from journals in the University system
Primary recommended readings from:
Heinberg, Richard, 2004, Power Down: Options and actions for a post-carbon world. New Society
Publishers, Gabriola Island, BC, 208 p. (ISBN 086571-510-6)
Kunstler, James H., 2005, The Long Emergency. Atlantic Monthly Press, New York, 307 p. (ISBN 0-

Deffeyes, Kenneth, 2005, Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert's Peak. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New

So one book written by a scientist, one book written by Mr Fark Nation and another book written by a neo-primitivist. Heavily biased isn't it?

They ARE the 'celebrities' of the Peak Oil movement or what-have-you...
If they want the full doomer-scope; they should have also had Ruppert's theories (and his new video). This neo-primitivist stuff is missing a step in the doomer scope... the die-off/kill-off...
This class is more like "Introduction to Peak-Oil-Doomerism 101".
But, you know, I've had a class in high school where the teacher used a history textbook that was written to make Columbus look like a hero and all that while neglecting to mention anything about the atrocities committed... he supplemented it with other textbook pages from other books and from Howard Zinn's book..

In my intro evnvironmental studies class we read Powerdown. The class covers a broader area than peak oil, obviously, but the prof seems fully aware of PO and a lot of the related dangers. There's also a class on sustainable agriculture I would absolutely love to take....

And you thought your gas bill was bad.
Quote:
ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Lewis Miller joked with his son as he opened his gas bill that the amount likely would give him a heart attack. Then, he saw that The Energy Cooperative of Newark had billed him $8,095 for the first nine days of service on his new account for his apartment.
"I thought I was just going to lay down and die," Miller said. He then had an anxious weekend because he received the bill Friday and couldn't get a hold of the gas company until Monday.

Hi everybody, Ive been lurking for a while, but this is my first post. As the title says, I live in suburban northeast ohio with my family. I am the only one who cares about peak oil. I live in a large house next to 60 acres of woods, so I'le have wood for a while at least. I have already started stocking up on supplies:fishing equipment, bow and arrows, candles, soap, hygene products, matches, and a few other things. I have quite a fleet of bikes and am very healthy.
I am taking horticulture tech prep at school, so I know a lot about plants, propagation, and growing a crop. My parents are typical upper-middle class consumers. we live paycheck to paycheck at times despite them making just over $200,000 a year. Being a cyclist and an environmentalist, I can't wait for peak oil to come.
What can I do to prepare for the future?

Pay attention in school. Go to college. Choose a career in alternative energy or mass transit industries.
Plan for a good future, be prepared for hard times. A little less on the bow and arrow Rambo bit, a little more on how you can make yourself valuable in your community. _________________ "Don't ever become a pessimist... a pessimist is correct oftener than an optimist, but an optimist has more fun, and neither can stop the march of events."

Paycheck to Paycheck on $200,000 a year??
I think your parents might need some debt counseling but, I think your doing great. Just stay out of any large amount of debt. Horticulture and Agriculture is something that will always be in demand. So if you enjoy it study it at college. Also Relax don't panic, Peak Oil does not mean the world will degenerate into Mad Max. So don't go overboard with the stockpiling. _________________ Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

You're doing good! Now i suggest LEARN LEARN LEARN! (which you already are).
Learn what grows in those woods that is eadible...as well as what you can hunt. Grow heirloom seeds & save them. Get a magnifying glass & try to start a small camp fire with it. Learn by doing. Find the nearest running stream to your house & see what a pain it is to carry just 1 gallon of water back to the house. etc., etc., etc. _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

Holy wow, I have to echo on the 200k a year and paycheck to paycheck. Are you sure your parents don't have a secret coke habit or something? I can't imagine making that much money and not having it coming out of my ears.
On a serious note, honestly, get your parents to give some of that money to you, or even better, tell them to deed some of that land to you. Or convince them to buy more land in the area. Your not in a bad area in terms of natural resources, but keep in mind the advice on the being valuable in your community. Given your parents pretty sweet set up, I would be reluctant to live too far away in case you need to move back.
You honestly will be an asset to any community you join given your mindset and your general survival skills. And I don't just mean the Rambo style survial skills, although don't degregate those too much. In a pinch, those can be quite handy. No I more mean your ability to see and prepare for things that are honestly quite hard to prepare for. You have probably done more than I have in the last 3 years I've known about this, and I have had alot more time to do something.
Just keep doing what your doing, that, and get as much land under your control as you can. Own it outright, and start building ties with people like yourself. Those ties more than anything will serve you well in any kind of situation, from long slow decline to Mad Max. In otherwords, make friends. _________________ Azreal60
