Hoarding is exactly what the government is doing right now by filling the SPR, and frankly it's the best thing that could happen. It drives prices up. High prices encourage demand destruction. They also finance new well development. The hoarded oil gives us a buffer to fall back on once shortages become more prevalent. High prices are what we need in order to adapt to what's coming, and the sooner they happen, the better.

We all share common needs. Water, shelter, air, food.

But we have specialized needs as well. These are medical, geographical, interpersonal.

Only you can make your list of personal needs.

Medical needs can be vitally important. Eyeglasses, asthma, prescription medication, diabetes, etc. You must plan for changes by fully educating yourself on your specific issues. History can show you how people dealt with your issue before modern medicine and Walmart. The internet can show you how more primitive people handle it today.
I was speaking about PO to a client of mine and she said she would just die if she couldnt get her asthma medication. end of conversation....
Its sad so many people believe 100% in modern medicine. Its overrated. I encourage you to seek out and explore nonconventional solutions to any specialized medical issues you have.
Weight is another specialized issue. Im shooting for 190 pounds. I heard a story last weekend about a WWII prisoner from my town who went in at 210 and came out at 95 lbs. So I guess bulking up is a good thing.

Geographical needs are considered best relative to people per square mile. If you need to relocate, read the relocation thread.

Interpersonal needs are the core of PO action. It will take intimate teamwork from every person in your family to ride out the transition years. You will need to rely on them 100% in ways you cant imagine now. Identify the most important people in your life and set goals of maximizing your relationship with them. Love is the easiest way to accomplish this Wink

Once you have your specialized needs identified, consider them in several scenarios:

#1 initial recession/depression: your needs now cost 50% more than they used to.

#2 deepened depression: your needs now cost 500% more than they used to. At what point in this progression will you no longer be able to pay?
What will you do then?

#3 disaster/crash/war: What will you do when supplies are intermittent or gone altogether?

#4 long term decline: How will you provide your needs at a primitive level?

The first step to action is a goal. then a plan. everyone's plan is as unique as their fingerprint.

Great post, sums up many of the things that have bouncing around in my head.
Just a quick comment on medicine and our modern pharmaceutical driven healthcare system. I am an asthmatic and have successfully reduced my intake of ventolin ( and other anti inflammatory inhalers ) down to almost zero. Actually I have not taken any medication for asthma in six months. That does not mean I don't still have attacks but they are fewer than when I was taking a variety of pharmaceuticals. I just ride them out although I understand not all asthmatics can do this. I have mostly just paid attention to my triggers a lot more closely and been aware of what times of the year are worse for me. What do think my doctor said when I told him ? I was expecting a positive reaction - I guess I shouldn't have been surprised - he berated me for not taking my meds. I no longer respect his opinion as he also seems to have bought into the " pharmaceutical solution ".
How does this relate to the difficulties we will face in the future ? Only in the sense that people who depend on pharmaceuticals may want to consider the future without them. I realise that not all people will enjoy the success I have experienced, but I believe it is at least worth thinking about. Had I not even tried, I would still be dependant on a variety of drugs that will not likely be available in the future.

googling for "history of eyeglasses" http://amos.indiana.edu/library/scripts/eyeglasses.html
short and easy to read!

"Roger Bacon, the medieval champion of experimental science, made the first recorded reference to the magnifying properties of lenses in 1262. Eyeglasses appeared first in Florence about 1280 and their use spread rapidly. (Their invention is traditionally assigned to Alessandro di Spina). A correct explanation of their operation, however, did not appear for centuries until 1604 with the publication of the work of the astronomer Johannes Kepler. In 1784 Benjamin Franklin invented bifocals."

So eyeglass technology has been around for 750 years. thats a good sign. :D

Obviously, if you qualify for laser surgery and can in any way afford it, get it asap.

Stock up on spares, even unstylish ones near your scrip. magnifying glasses and maybe even a spotting scope.

consider scenarios without glasses and take appropriate steps. Blind people lead full lives, there's no reason you couldnt also with limited vision in a worst case scenario.
expand your other 4 senses.
