Brazil's plan to become one of the world's biggest oil exporters hinges on exploiting crude 6 miles below the ocean surface in deposits so hot they can melt the metal used to carry uranium to nuclear plants.

Technically a huge challenge, but some of the problems highlighted in this article don't sound that bad. Temperatures sufficient to melt Bismuth(?!). Surely they can source steel pipe capable of withstanding 260°C. The bit about Chevron shagging 12 bits when drilling a deep well in the Gulf of Mexico at a cost of $600,000? Not much of a big deal if you're spending 100's of millions on a project.

How have they managed to assess this field's potential though, if it's beneath signal absorbing salts? That's what perplexes me. _________________ Bugger me, I hear oil's runnin out mate!

Good point. All I know is - if it was the mining industry and you were going to the market with some unreliable geophysics and a couple of drillholes and talking about resources and production - you would be laughed out of town.
