Boat owners feeling pain at the pump

The pain at the pump appears to be even greater at the pier.
For Lake Michigan marinas, four dollar a gallon gas is a thing of the present.
One marina along the St. Joseph River near Lake Michigan was selling gas today for $4.26 a gallon. Some boaters say that’s a price they’ll be paying long after the summer is gone.
“Maybe we’ll skip a winter vacation to keep the gas in the boat, we would preference the boat,” said Ted Schaefer while standing near his Chris Craft. Schaefer explained, “our boat holds 350-gallons so if you’re talking four dollars plus a gallon you’re at $1500 or maybe $1600 dollars, it’s a lot of money.”
Meantime, the prospect of buying gas for the boat in today’s market has some boat owners thinking the unthinkable.
“You know, it’s getting into my pocketbook,” said boat owner Ken Maple. “In fact, we’ve even, we’re even discussing maybe about selling the boat, but selling a boat my size, which is a 40-foot boat, is like selling housing now, the market is just not there.”
Meantime, high gas prices appear to be here, there and everywhere, and charter captain Ken Neidlinger is trying to keep his head above water.
“When I’m running out to 300 feet of water, I get a mile a gallon, so far this spring I’ve been burning 100-dollars worth of gas every trip.”
Neidlinger is aggravated and philosophical at the same time. “We Americans will not give up our cars, or our boats…So if the gas is high…they’re going to have to put up with it.”
“People love to go fishing and they love to drive their cars and they’re going to put up with it.” |

Damn. $1500-$1600 fill up?
Sounds like a lot of these boat owners can't sell their boats. Can't unload them with gasoline being so expensive now. Just like the SUV market. |

When have boat owners not felt pain at the pump?
At a pier you can be charged 50% more than at a gas station up the road. |

How long before the northern summer "driving season"/"boating season"/"flying season" becomes the walking/cycling/kayaking season?

I've always wondered the same thing. Driving in circles on a man-made lakes for the thrill of wasting gasoline. They hunt for bass the cockaroach of declined waterways. It is so pathetic. 1 mile to the gallon. stupid f#cks.

No man made lakes for me, thanks.
I do however have access to the ocean and although I currently have a two seater sit-on-top fishing kayak, it isn't really comfortable to spend a longer time in.
So if I want to still have a larger boat later on to go fishing, I am wondering about the options that are available;
1) sail boat - might be an option although I have to get under bridge on the way out to the ocean so only smaller version would be practical. This is not a preferred option.
2) electric motor - can be used on dingies. Not that suitable out on blue water so not a preferred option.
Are there any alternatives? i.e. are there electrical motors for larger boats (i.e. 6 meter boats) that can be used in combination with petrol engine? (i.e. petrol for transport and then electrical for short distance moving around or trolling)
Any motors running on LPG?

Excuse me if I don't shed any tears for anyone who has enough money to throw into a personal boat / yacht. I guess complaining about fuel prices has officially become the nation's 2nd most popular pastime or is it now the 1st?
I honestly remember reading a thread about someone complaining how fuel costs is making it expensive to fly private jets!  |

OMG! That is the end of the world! No more boats for the rich! Let me shed a tear... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. 
Buy a frigging kayak - even better for your health!! Use the spare money to help pay any debt that you might still have. If you have no debts, lucky you, use the money to prepare for when things get really ugly. My goodness, I hope there are not many of those around!!!

I am not dreading ALL the effects of Peak Oil (well, maybe down the line ...). If it causes that PLAGUE of jet-skis to be abandoned, I will be so happy! I see them in quiet waters that are breeding and foraging grounds for herons, egrets, and other water birds, places where they are NEVER supposed to go. It's horrible to be watching the wildlife foraging in some back bay flee in terror from some idiot in a jet-ski.
And I hope most ATVs get abandoned as well. There are some legitimate uses for these - but joyriding by overweight 15 year old boys is not one of them. Those guys need to be using their muscles. |

Alot of the big boat owners are filthy rich, doubt they'd be worried
about gas. |

| a friend of my wife e-mailed us and came into the grocery where I work to urge us to not buy gas on the "don't buy gas day". Then she bought a 2008 dodge charger. Yesterday she bought a jet-ski. |

Welcome to the past.
FYI: when I was little, all we had was a 14" boat with a 5hp motor. But, no! Now you gotta have a $40,000 bass boat. 
Oh, I do have a boat. It's a 15" 1960 (speedboat/ hand layed fiberglass) with a 1963 40hp Big twin. ele start without a charging system. I got $500 into her. Runs great.  |

You want lousy gas mileage, get one of these. Really big in the late 60's. The day's............
Back in the 70's I ran a 20' hydrostream with 175 hp merc, hydraulic transom, foot throttle and chopper prop. She would do about 70 mph. The Brother ran a 20’ Checkmate with one of the first 235 Johnson’s (race motor from lake Tahoe) with a sea- bold prop. That thing was wicked.  |

Yep, because that is the only use a boat has. 
Every boat gets 1 mpg and every boat owner circles endlessly on man made lakes looking for farm bred bass.
Fire up some neurons next time and think a bit would you? |
