Historical account of Famine in a Industrial Country.
The Dutch famine of 1944 (known as hongerwinter ("Hunger winter") in Dutch) was a famine that took place in the Netherlands during the winter of 1944-1945, near the end of World War II. A total of 18,000 people died during the famine--or 15 out of every 1,000 Dutch citizens.[
This famine was unique as it took place in a modern, developed and literate country, albeit suffering under the privations of occupation and war. The well documented experience has allowed scientists to measure the effects of famine on human health.
Perhaps could be used for insight into conditions within a modern industrial country after the impact of peak oil.

Interesting facts. Thanks.

Switzerland was not. | Only the US and UK would have been further advanced as a society, it was the original founding ground of much of capitalism, had a very very long history of intellectual freedom and amoung the most advanced chemical and electric industries in the world pre-war.
In many ways the social institutions in pre war holland were stronger than most current states outside the 'west'. |

Comparing the Dutch famine to peak oil is like comparing Hurricane Katrina to peak oil.
Unless you're expecting your country to be invaded by foreigners and bombed to ashes...peak oil is not going to look like the Netherlands in 1944. _________________ "www.peakoil.com is the Myspace of the Apocalypse." |

"The well documented experience has allowed scientists to measure the effects of famine on human health."
This is the only comparison. _________________ Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well. |
