If we are to visit our children we have the option of flying, going by car (and ferries) or spending 2-3 days on trains and ferries. This year we opted to go by car, but when I went on line to book, I found that the ferry operator is killing their service at the end of August. [Press release] | Quote: | | Furthermore, dramatically increasing oil prices, downward price pressure from over capacity in the travel market place and the current economic slowdown are burdening the service. |
So we have had to move up our holiday by one month to "go while we can"...at least this gives one last chance to see Norway and visit with a sister in the North of England (as all the other relatives are in the south).
This is not the end of the world for us as in other years we will still have the chance to drive and use the more southern ferry routes, but things seem to be contracting faster than I am comfortable with (ie they are starting to directly affect me and my plans!) _________________ We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice. |

I know exactly what you mean. To say things are happening much faster than expected is an understatement. Last year I predicted $3.50 gasoline and $4.00 in 2009 and was told by everyone I was crazy. I also did not expect any real slowdown in automobile use or expect drastically higher food prices before 2010. While I expected a few bank closures this year from the sub-prime mess, I did not expect to wonder which bank was going this week.
Now I'm praying that a couple of megaprojects coming on line can pump a few million extra barrels a day into the system, if even for a few months, before depletion makes their contribution moot. I'm not expecting oil to drop below $100, but it would be nice to see it pull back to around $100 a barrel for a few months.
Time, ask me for anything but time. _________________ When somebody makes a statement you don't understand, don't tell him he's crazy. Ask him what he means. -- Otto Harkaman, Space Viking |

Island,
Any cutbacks on the ferry to Talinn? How about the one to Stockholm?
Wish we had your rail service. |

'Country folk' in the US really believe they are 'independent.' What a joke. They drive everywhere. Commute to work. Kids in rural schools with no bus service. 'Stock up' once a week at a giant Costco in town. Eat and fuel their over-sized home with propane. When the economy tanks they will forced to abandon their homes and move into a shelter in town. _________________

I think the joke is thinking in the town will be any better.
Unless you have some rose colored lenses in your glasses that I dont have in mine?
I can tell you people in the country know more about being independent then someone in the city will ever know. Gardens, canning, things like that...... _________________ "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the

True, but at least I have 10 acres of timber and potential crop land. What are you townies going to eat? |

These are going strong still, although ferries further up the coast to Sweden are suffering - they have been suffering ever since the duty free was eliminated. Down in the south the boats can stop off at the Aland Islands, which never joined the EU so duty free goods can be sold on these boats!
The bus services are suffering. Recently Helsinki announce huge losses on their buses. Here, the local bus firm wants to cut the route by about 8 km. I would then be at the end of the line, but it would mean a recently built conference centre and its newly built hotel (built over this past winter) will no longer be serviced by bus. I guess the taxis will be busy. _________________ We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice. |

Not the ex-urban style "country folk" which is a large number of them these days. Most country folk buy their food at the store like everyone else.
I live in the country and I still buy most of my food at the store. _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

Even the few percent who've prepared and are capable of grain production and have chicken coops, paddocks, and hunt are still on the oil teat. A lot of you doomer/preppers believe a few months of MRE's will get you through. Through what? What comes after the chaos? The Lord Baby Jesus comes down and blesses your garden? ha ha ha
Peak oil is forever and our industrial system will not self-heal. Better to be in a small town surrounded by fields. Or in a big city by a rail line.
There's gonna be a sad mass exodus from the boonies. Folks moping their way into the cities, just hoping for a handout. And they will get it no doubt. Mush in the morning. Gruel at lunch. and a dry crust and a cup'o'bullion for dinner. _________________

That's what I expect. Most of my neighbors will go back to town, I'm pretty sure.

what I keep thinking is that all the stuff we are growing in not very nutritious (tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, watermelons, etc.) we only have a few sweet potatoes. How many calories in a jar of tomatoes? |

Maybe you might want to start concentrating on growing more calorie crops. _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

Even THAT is better than British Railways catering !!
Sad to hear of the loss of a valuable ferry link to the UK. Probably more to come.
Incidentally, for those with large homes to heat in winter, 3 things to do - Insulate, Inulate & Insulate. Then check your insulation & fit more. Do a good job & be amazed at the savings.
