|

I live in the Hampton Roads area (southeastern VA) and would love to find a local "peak oil" group. I went to www.relocalize.net and there are only TWO groups in Virginia and the group nearest me (about 30 minutes away) hasn't shown any activity in almost two years.
Any idea how to find (or create) a local group?
It's hard to believe that with the interest in this topic that someone hasn't organized a local group of some kind.

You could try Meetup.com. If you can't find a group, you can create one. _________________ Live simply, love generously, care deeply, and speak kindly.

If I might suggest...
It's not worth it to start a peak oil group. I think you'd be better off meeting up with a doctor, a welder, a couple of gardeners, etc.
It might sound like fun to meet up with other peakniks but come on. The clock is ticking, and knowing about peak oil is not all that useful. Is it. There's a ton of peak oil aware people on this site that haven't done crap other than read the news regularly.
As much as I'm wrapped up in the whole peak oil thing, I don't care if I ever meet another peaknik. I have crap to do, I'd 1000x rather meet up with somebody that can help me build a house than someone that can talk historical extraction rates. |

Personally, I would suggest trying to find a "sustainability" group, or a "green living" group or even a gardening group, rather than a peak oil group per se. _________________ "...powerdown so soft and fluffy you'll think you're living in a pillow." - jboogy |

You will learn more here than from any real local group.
You can access the knowledge and experience of hundreds of people from all over the world here, where a local group quickly runs through its collective knowledge and then you don't have much to talk about and you wind up just sitting around nodding your heads at each other. _________________

This site is a good resource. It definitely compliments action taken in the real world, outside this site. Action taken in the real world in turn compliments the site by providing accounts, examples, pictures, successes, failures etc.
I don't really coordinate with anyone under the banner of any given group. I do know various people who can see the impending situation to some degree, so I talk with them. They tend to be knowledgeable people in some way. They're mostly clustered in one area, so it makes sense to at least build an informal network of people, especially considering the skills they could bring to the table.
Also, just pay attention. People generally take pride in what they know. Just showing some interest and asking a couple questions is a good way to get a free lesson on how something works. Maybe you won't need the knowledge, maybe you will. Either way, I enjoy people getting wound up talking about something they know. |

Start one yourself, Meetup.com is a good place to start. Or go down to the local river and start turning over rocks. Alot of the people who are hard core peak oilers are trying to secretly prepare and they don't want you to know what they are storing or where. To some of us, the more people who know the more expensive it will be to fill the root cellar.
There is probably some similarity between the hard core doomer and the old freedom dollar crowd, and the Posse Comitatus.
That makes this site and the movement interesting for alot of other reasons to alot of other people than just those wanting to learn about peak oil. |

Hello Hope_Full
I live in King George county....east of Fredericksburg. I am not far from you. I am however not interested in joining a meetup group. However, we can keep in contact if you like.
What is your current living condition in that area that would help you live through hard times? _________________ To survive you must know what to do, when to do it, how to do it and why you are doing it. |
