Just wanted to get my first post in. I've been browsing the forums for the past few weeks and decided to make an account. With gas prices over $4 I recently sold my car and bought a bike and have begun biking to school and work. The ideas of peak oil are still fairly new to me although for a long time I've known that our society consumes far above a sustainable amount of goods. I am graduating college next month and am trying to figure out what actions I should take in planning for the future. As I think the affects of peak oil will slowly unfold (as they are now) the city of Chicago will not be an ideal place to be. A huge portion of Chicago's population is already struggling and will only become more desperate as the price of everything continues to rise. Thus far I have done very little planning besides buying a few books which I am in the process of reading recommended by this site, The Long Emergency and the Urban Survival Guide. I have a pack of supplies for a days journey north on bike to my parents house in the event that it hit the fan over night. There is a paved bike trail that goes from where I am now to within a few miles of my parents house. I will continue to browse the forums and try and gain the knowledge I'll need for the future. Any input or advice would be appreciated. |

Welcome! I lived on the near west side for four years back in the late 80's. You must not be in the city; I remember there being excellent public transit there.

| When the CTA isn't threatening to stop service with "doomsday" scenarios because of lack of funding it works great. I can get anywhere in the city between the CTA and my bike. As far as after college, I'm still up in the air. I am graduating with a degree in Psychology so my options are more school or continue working the job I do now (law clerk). I am looking to possibly leave the city and either teach abroad (maybe Brazil) or move out to Colorado where some good friends live. I'm still trying to figure it all out. With having lived in Chicago my whole life I think it'd be good to get out and see what else is out there. With my recent knowledge of peak oil I think Chicago isn't an ideal location to live in the future. |

Welcome, Gus! Please continue reading, and don't forget to check the archives when you have time.
And, please feel free to ask questions when the need arises. In between the gallows humor and the occassional dust-up, there's loads of good information here! _________________ "RRrrruuuunnnn!!!" ~Apocalypto |
