I will believe the Saudis don't see any upcoming problems with Ghawar when they cancel one of their projects due to low oil prices. If they continue to be full steam ahead with increasing their capacity then I think they are aware that Ghawar may not be as robust in 5 years time as they would like us to believe.

I think "long term" anything will be almost a thing of the past.
Farm land might bring you "longer term" stability, but it wont solve all problems.
IMO it's going to be a day to day strugle kind of thing, rather than a prep/save for a cushy retirement kind of thing. _________________ Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.
This does nothing for long-term satiability once TSHTF.
On the bright side, I'm assuming, you don't live in the desert.
But, I here ya. My hubby and I have been discussing the fastest way to put away/earn/gather/whatever money to buy land and go elsewhere while also getting out of debt (good luck there).
Any way you slice it, when/if TSHTF it will be a mess even for those who saw it coming a little bit before. The people who have been planning for years and can live off the grid will fair the best, but, let's be honest...it won't be a cake walk for anyone...even the Amish will have issues if the SHTF.

Long term plans don't survive in the real world. There are too many variables. Will we go the way of Zimbabwe and Argentina? Will we end up in fascism or communism? Will we just simmer in a long depression, eking out an existence? Will we all be pressed into farm service, or will we be able to garden at home? Will people riot, or will they commit suicide? Will there be civil war, or will people come together?
Even from one neighborhood to another it might go differently. Even if you have a plan B through Z, and you might have to make up a new plan for something you never even considered.
I'm just learning as much as I can and getting my house in order as fast as I can.

This is probably what troubles me the most. Hitler rose to power after WWI when hyperinflation (supposedly inspired by post-war repairation payments) brought the German economy to its knees. The German people quickly grew weary of wondering where their next meal was coming from and/or how would they pay for it?
That's how Hitler got his foothold. He brought promises of economic stability and even prosperity.
And that's (IMHO) the real danger of America slipping into a Peak-Oil depression. A charismatic leader could sweep us off our feet and promise food and economic stability and I fear we'd follow him/her like lambs to the slaughterhouse.

Well, actually Hitler promised the above, but it was actually the (West) German people themselves who WORKED their way into economic stability and prosperity, AFTER WW2, - With organisational help from USA / UK, who didnt hinder them, unlike the soviets in East Germany.
Big difference is now peak oil. We, the west, must abandon the east (India & China), rebuild our industry, become self sufficient, etc, ON LESS & LESS OIL. - BIG TASK AHEAD
With will & ingenuity it can be done - The Germans have shown the way. Question is, will we ?.
